Really dim question about boiler settings

Metric units or imperial units? It's marked on your meter.

Now you're asking - I have no idea. The meter is really old and bulky (about the size of a box of tissues, if that helps identify anything!) and stuck on the outside wall where you have to fight through half a tree to get to it - I'll have a look when I go out.
  • We had a system like that in a rented flat too. I got quite confused about people's talk of setting room temperatures and systems switching off when the temperature was reached, because if I put the heating on constant at its lowest setting the flat would just get hotter and hotter.

Anyway, your cheapest option is to simply heat the flat to the lowest temperature you are comfortable at. I found it better to turn the boiler dial up and set it to come on for an hour in the morning and 1-2 hours at night.
  • Thanks, LittleMissAspie. Good to know i'm not alone with the antiquated heating system!

I have been putting the boiler on for a couple of hours in the morning in an attempt to heat the flat up enough to last until it comes on again in the evening, but since I'm home all day, as soon as it goes off it gets really cold again because the flat is so poorly insulated. I think all the heat just goes straight out as soon as it comes in.

It's just occurred to me though that I'm sitting right next to an open fireplace (no fire in it), and the heat is probably going straight up that (and the draft is coming straight down it) so I've stuffed a pillow in it and the difference is immediate... so hopefully i'll be able to turn it down a bit later.

Thanks for all the help - I really am a novice at this stuff.
