Jobs that have been taken being advertised?

I wonder how common a practice this is? Being unemployed I check the jobcentre website daily, well its almost hourly but I came across a job in a restaurant, My wife was a supervisor in this particular restaurant for 10+ years but she gave it up after falling pregnant, I mentioned the job to her and it tempted her to go back so she called into the restaurant yesterday to enquire, was talking to an old colleague who mentioned she has also left after falling pregnant but she started again yesterday, she spoke to her former boss who told her yes this person had taken the job. So it hit the Jobcentre yesterday morning when in actual fact it was already taken, so its made me wonder how common a practice this is? I presume they have to advertise due to fair employment laws.

No, there's no legal requirement to advertise any job. As long as you aren't discriminating against anyone for legally recognised 'discriminatory' factors (like race, gender) you can give a job to anyone you want.
Don't know why it was advertised still - maybe she just got there quicker than your wife? Maybe it took a day to get through the JobCentre processes and out on display/on the website and by then it was filled?
I don't think there's a huge conspiracy behind it.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Very common, as a lot of employers think they have to advertise the post, when in fact they do not. There are some employers however, that do have to advertise, but even most of these have already given the post to a selected person. Work of mouth seems to be the way of finding employment at this moment in time.0

Some jobs DO have to be advertised -usually it's part of a union or worker's agreement for example most LAs have it in place-A food chain isn't likely to though.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

There are a lot of jobs on JSD that are not even vacant0

So it seems sending out CV's/word of mouth is of more benefit than checking the job centre, I've found this a lot with recruitment agencies, advertising jobs that don't exist to get you on there books.0

Wow just got a read receipt from a job I applied to that was advertised on Job Seekers Direct on the 15th January!! I guess the job has been filled now even though I applied the day it went live on JSD. Makes you wonder what these people at companies do when they give their email as a contact for the CV's0

Well it could be that they don't read any of the emails applying for a specific job until the closing date has been reached. We don't. They are all reviewed and shortlisted at the same time.
As for what else those people at companies do when they give their email as a contact it could be anything or everything. I manage all recruitment at our place so its always my email that gets published and in addition to this I also do the rest of the hr functions; manage the fleet; facilities management; regulatory compliance - whether legislative or industry specific; quality assurance and auditing; purchasing and pricing for one of the 5 divisions; manage that divisions employees; stock control; all H&S; etc etc etc - and I also end up covering for any other senior manager thats off.
Please don't just assume that person is sat there twiddling their thumbs waiting for applications to come in. I realise being unemployed / looking for another job is tough but its not always any easier being employed (its just a different set of pressures)0 -

IF they do not get read CV's as they come in or many weeks later that's how they get lost in the system or in fact just get lost or deleted and yes I have had emails from jobs just deleted and not read some months after.tizerbelle wrote: »Well it could be that they don't read any of the emails applying for a specific job until the closing date has been reached. Well the job said urgent immediate start so guess it wasn't - plus it was only 15 mins walk away and can't see that they would have been over come with applications. I do not expect a reply.0 -
It's VERY annoying isn't it? I go to a lot of trouble to draft an individualised cover letter and tweak my CV each time to match the position I'm applying for. If that is not a real job opportunity, because it's already been given to someone "within the ranks" it's frustrating.
I used to work in NHS and they are one of the worst culprits. They have an internal candidate lined up to start in post but go through all the Faff of advertising through Job centre anyway.. Bizarre practice that is surely a waste of time and resources for several groups of people!!!0
