Hi,

Does anyone know which charity shops will accept clothes which are no longer wearable as rags?

Thanks

There was a program on the radio the other day and the lady from Cancer research said they would accept rags, coincidentally I was just on my way to drop some "good stuff" at my local Sue Ryder shop so I asked if they had the same policy and they do.

One time they were really picky at all the charity shops around here but the price of rags must be high, they get 38p per kg. It all goes to eastern europe for processing.

Another thing I was told was that charities can now claim gift aid on donations of stuff not just money, I was just looking to see if this had been posted before starting a thread on it when I saw your question.

  • PDSA shops should take items for the rag merchants - it's how they recycle worn out staff uniforms from the hospitals :)
This year, I will mainly be kicking some serious money saving butt! :D

Most charity shops will take rags if you know they're rags, it's best to put a note saying rags it saves time when were sorting. Also the rags from the charity i work for get collected by a company from pompey for £4.50 a bag and then get sold onto a textile company in London which recycle them and alot goes in to carpets and rugs as well as sofa's!

A few charities are starting this now it's very complicated for us. They can claim 28p per pound your donation got sold for.
I know Sue ryder are now doing this and Help The Aged (my employer/charity are starting this as well as most other major charity shops.

    Hope this Helps

Tenovus (a cancer charity in Wales) will take bags of rags in their shops. They are collected about once a month and the charity is paid by weight.

  • Hi
I work for Save the Children, and we always welcome donations of textiles, saleable or rag. We make approx. 6% of our income from the sale of rags, plus it is a fantastic way of recycling your old clothes.
If you're able to sort the bags before dropping them off, it makes it easier for our 3500 volunteers (very few of our workforce are paid), or you could always pick up a volunteering form and join us!
    Thanks.
