Sonic clean-Is British gas pulling a fast one

Hi
My boiler, a Valliant 837, started making a noise while we were using the hot water. It does not make a noise when the heating is on, only the hot water. It sounds something like a helicoptor. My gasman thought it was a fan or bearing, i and another friend think the same.
I have British Gas homecare and today they came out to look at it. I was not at home but a friend was. The gasman has booked to come again to do a 'sonic clean', which will take 4 hours. He said that the water is being 'part vapourised' and that cleaning would solve the problem. The boiler is 3 years old and all the pipes and radiators were replaced at the same time.
i do not know until i phone if this is an extra cost (like a powerflush),as the terms say exclusions include 'repairing faults or clearing physical blockages', but do not mention a 'sonic clean' but do point out a powerflush is extra.
I find this 'sonic clean' hard to believe it will solve the problem. I still think it is the fan or bearing. If it is an extra cost i will be even more sceptical. Would any gas person care to comment.
Thanks

Ultrasonic cleaners themselves aren't a scam - they're used widely for cleaning things like jewellery - just google them. Whether it will solve your problem I don't know.0
