play.com faulty hard drive

Options
Hi all you wonderful techies :D

I've popped this on the consumer board but thought some of you may have dealt with play

Hi all

I am hoping someone could give me some advice on a problem with play.com. I ordered a portable external hard drive from them on 5th December 2011 which will have arrived around a week later. I have used it three times since I got it. When I tried to use it today it isn't working and is just making a loud clicking noise, have tried on two other laptops with the same result. I emailed play.com straight away expecting it to be a simple matter of exchanging it, their response is that because the item has been removed from it's packaging and is over 30 days old it is nothing to do with them and I should contact the manufacturer. I was always of the view that a contract is with the retailer not the manufacturer but am unsure if this applies with play being based in Jersey.

The drive was only cheap but it is still annoying that they are just fobbing me off with this.

Would appreciate any advice or views.

Thanks very much, Louise

I did but the item was only £12.99 :o I know it's only a small amount but it should still work!

    It's a CnM Core / 20GB / Portable USB Powered / External Hard Drive

Your contract is with the retailer i.e. play. But the warranty (usually12m) is from the manufacturer. You could also ask for a refund/replacement under SOGA from play (I assume this applies in the C.I?).
But assuming it's a reputable brand with a UK sales and support operation, you might just as well contact the manufacturer for a replacement-it'll probably be quicker.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

  • Result!!

Had an email from play this morning saying they wanted an engineers report! I replied and said I thought an engineers report would cost significantly more than a £12.99 drive and I didn't expect any further help from them and would be closing my account.

Three minutes later got a reply saying they will refund on this occasion.
  • good result then
