Hi
I have some wmv files on an old XP laptop (over 9 years old). I want to move them to my new Win 7 desktop.
I tried copying them onto a external hard drive through the USB port on the laptop.
When I connect the hard drive to my desktop, it does not see the files. Not even DOS sees the files. It sees the folder in which the files reside, but not the files.
I then copied them from my laptop to a USB memory stick, but again the same problem in that they are not seen by the desktop.
Can anyone see what I am doing wrong? How can transfer the files from the laptop to the desktop?
Many thanks in advance.

Are those files set to be hidden on xp?
Also if you have a wireless router try setting up to share files over wifi network and see if you can see them.0 -
It is probably down to taking ownership of the files , and possibly because hidden files are not being viewed. An easier way is (I cannot believe I said that) another way is to use the network to copy them but that is probably more complicated. On W7 right click on the folder and select properties , then select security then change the ownership etc .... but give me 5 or so and I will find the link to show you how to do it...4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Thanks will give that a go if the XP ownership thing doesn't work out.0 -
If they are in My Documents or similar data area there should not be a problem with permissions/ownership.
Are you sure you're copying the files to the External HDD / Memory stick, and not creating shortcuts to them? How do I add a signature?0 -
The files are in a temp folder that I created. Seems like not so temp though.....0

Edited: the folder is probably protected not the files but it is a PITA getting things sorted ...4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0
