I'm going to spend this weekend in Cardiff. I want some ideas for visiting places round about? Any suggestions, please? Places of interest? Coastal places (depending on weather); hills; reasonably priced restaurants?

    Hello cariad123

  • call doen llanelli lovelly coast and if you like rugby union it the home to the best welsh region the scarlets.
  • Cardiff is a great city. The usual stuff to do Cardiff Castle, Millennium Stadium tour, boat trip in Cardiff Bay then stop off in Mimosa (opposite subway Cardiff Bay) the food is fantastic. Cardiff city centre is being redeveloped at the min so some areas are a bit of a mess. If you like history the musuem of welsh life at St Fagans. Hope you have a fab time
  • Thanks for replies. Very helpful.

Have a look at CASTELL COCH, it is a folly build by the earl of bute way back when.

you can see it on the right about halfway up the hill just before the cardiff turn off from the M4.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

  • Cardiff Castle is cool a bit of peace and tranquility away from the city. Theres a lovely italian in town called topo gigio just off st marys street. The bay is nice for a walk, and techniquest in the bay is a great place for kids. As follies go Castell Coch is strange, a sign of too much money and not a lot of sense, very childrens fairy tales. St fagans is a nice place to visit if you can spare a few hours loads of houses have been removed from all over wales brick or stone by stone, and rebuilt there. Theres lovely bara brith, and welsh cakes on sale so great for a snack attack. Night life is ok but I have been out of that seen for a few years. Have a nice trip, I assume you have already sort accommodation.
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.

For Sunday lunch I would recommend visiting "El Puerto". It's a great place. Probably slightly more expensive than average but not much. It's on the Penarth side of the Cardiff Bay Barrage. It's quite interesting to watch the boats coming and going through the sea locks and there's a reasonably pleasant walk along the barrage itself.

I went past Castell Coch a short while ago and it was covered in scaffolding, so I would check to see if it's actually open.

The Welsh Folk Museum is a good day out.

For a walk on the beach I'd nip to Porthcawl. Have a stroll along the prom, over Locks Common and on to Rest Bay. There's a nice coffee shop on the prom.

If you want a walk up a hill your best bet is probably to go towards Brecon, stop at the Storey Arms and zip up Pen y Fan. There are actually a heap of other hills which might be considered nicer, but Pen y Fan is the highest peak in S Wales and it's a good popular one to do. There's a nice coffee shop at the visitor centre in Libanus when you've come down.

(Has anybody noticed that I like coffee and cake?)
  • Castell Coch is open, but limited hours at the moment and I think it can close at short notice, depending on the works!

Cardiff Bay, as mentioend, is good for food, I'd recommend Bellini's, an Italian restaurant, speciality is yummy pasta.

Town hasn't got a great deal of touristy things to do, it's a bit like a building site in places because we're having a new shopping centre in 2009!

I'd take a trip to the Millenium Stadium and Millenium Centre, both are fantastic buildings and offer tours, for a bit of sea air, if you are feeling brave, take the train to Barry Island and walk along the beach and have chips!

Further up the M4, you have a fantastic place called Southerndown, fantastic cliff views and lovely walks, will be quite bracing at this time of year though!

Also, Caerphilly, has a castle which is open to the public.
