I currently have an amd athlon 64 socket 939 3000+ processor, my mboard supports socket 939 athlon 64 / 64FX

The fastest processor is probably the Fx-60 for single core (fine if you're a gamer) or as timerflake said, a Athlon 64x2 4800+ for dual core.

A cheaper option maybe a Optron instead of the fx60 as it is a server cpu it will take more of a hammering the downside is the fsb is lower:

it's for a htpc running media center but needing some extra clout to run a HD DVD

Depending on your budget I would look at the AMD 64 X2 and Optrons you can find a wide choice at:

https://www.scan.co.uk they have today only specials they change daily so have a look at that.

https://www.ebuyer.com only thing about ebuyer is they can be slow on delivery but other wise are pretty good they have clearance specials and stuff.

The AMD server part is the Opteron (not meaning to be pedantic just in case of search/spelling issues) but is only available in socket 940.

The fastest socket 939 processor is the AMD FX-57.

The highest performance socket 939 processor is the AMD FX-60.

The cheapest performance socket 939 processor will be the AMD Athlon64 x2 4800+

sablade, I stand corrected. I had forgotten about the Opteron64 100 series which is socket 939. Go here for the full line up and the detailed specs.

I would recommend the Athlon64 x2 4200+ and spend the rest on decent video graphics card and HDD.
