I had the same problem - monitor under-read by 50%. I was assured the tolerance is +/- 10% so I defintiely had a rogue one. Since they replaced it, it agrees well.
What still puzzles me is how the background usage (when no major appliances is use ) varies.0 -

My fridge is the biggest cause of variation in "background" use. The compressor cuts in every 20 minutes or so and the defrost heater, which is rated at 750W, cuts in about once every 10 hours to do its stuff.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. My efergy USB monitor reads 4-5% high. For instance for Jan it says 339 kwh whereas the meter says 322. I've dropped the default voltage to see if I can get it more accurate for this month. Presumably it works out kwh from sensing current and then multiplying by voltage. I don't consider that error to be bad but decided to have a tweak anyhow.0

Not solely.
Having a rough idea of what the reading should be when you go to bed is helpful.
In my case, if it's ~140W, I've left nothing extra on. (if it's 210, the fridge is on).
This has probably saved me 10 quid or more this year. I have occasionally in the past accidentally left the garage lights on for a couple of weeks - 300W.0
