Secondary glazing cost?

Options
Anyone installed secondary glazing in a listed building? I've viewed a house which I'm considering a second viewing it's a listed property which would need it installed due to road noise. Roughly how much would it cost to install it has about 8 windows that would need doing ranging from tiny ones to one quite large one.

Thanks

    Hi,

You will need to obtain Listed Buiding Consent to install secondary glazing in a listed building. I would run it by the local conservation officer as it is not always given. As to cost, if approval is obtained, there may be only certain types of secondary glazing the conservation officer may approve of, the usual rule of thumb there is that it will be more expensive as it is a listed property! If LBC is obtained though, and the installation of secondary glazing is deemed an addition to the property rather than maintenance then there will be no VAT to pay.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure consent would be given as the adjoined property has secondary glazing. I'm not sure that the vat relief would apply to it but I'll ask them anyway if I buy it.

I spoke to a friend today who said it would be in the region of £2000 does this sound about right?

    Hi

Good that the adjoined property has secondary glazing. Sorry cannot help you with costs, we reinstated the missing shutters on the windows. Good luck if you proceed with the house.

I would think 2K about right. We had about 4 large windows done last year in London for £1K

I installed secondary glazing many years ago in my listed building house, I didn't consult with council, as of course, glazed units are internal and, I had planners around in the past on different matters, nothing said.

Regarding cost. I bought kits from a diy type store, each part had to be trimmed for each window, then I bought second hand tempered glass, got them cut at home to suit. I still have them, they work a treat.

No idea if kits can still be purchased, kits were plain old aluminium extrusion.

    HTH?

    Regards......
