Hi guys, these are all things I need to ocnsider this week as we exchange contracts on my house. The property I am buying will hopefully echange in the next 3-4 weeks but will not be able to complete till May as part of the agreement we placed when bidding on the house.
Therefore for around 6-8 weeks we will need storage for a family of 4s things to include furniture etc. Packaging materials to store things in and protect things. A removals firm to move things around. Is it cheaper to hire a van for 2 seperate days and hope family can help? Also we have available to us my parents house to stop at with them but it is a bit of a squash and 60 miles from where we work so ideally a short term let near to our jobs in Stockport.
There's not much info on these things compared to how many of us are buying and selling houses so any information on this thread would be usefull so it may be a help for other if not me. Please share your experiences and if you can help me at the same time with an idea of costs(MSE style) etc Id be extremely gratefull.

safe store just quoted me £184 plus a returnable deposit of £160 for 12 weeks storage on a 100sqft container. This includes van hire(24hours), locks, insurance upt 11k. Does this sound reasonable to anyone. This is based in Stockport.
They are asking me to put down a returnable no query deposit of £20 today to reserve the box as they are filling up. I know this is just the sales patter but just in case and based on the fact we probably need it is it worth it???Saving needed to emigrate to Oz*September 2015*

are you already a member of freecycle? I'd strongly recommend you sign up - our one people post quite often with packing crates, bubble wrap etc that have done their job and are no longer needed after the move has been completed. So you could pick up a lot of packing things for free0

Hi Icklejulez, though I can't help with the storage (we had family that could help when we moved) I can give you the name of the firm we hired our van/transit from - they were really good, and seemed to be one of the more 'customer orientated' companies I spoke to (and believe me, there are some hire companies that I would avoid out of principle, just after a phone call, with their attitudes !!).
We used Adeva, and they're based just (literally, 2mins) outside of Stockport centre (if you know Lancashire Hill, they're 2 mins from the top of there, near Screwfix).
Not only were they one of the most 'economical' (very MSE) they were small enough to help out when we were looking using different sized vans on different days (we did all the bigs stuff whilst we had the tail lift van, and the rest was moved using a transit). They allowed us to 'swap' the vans around when we wanted, and were generally very amenable with us throughout what was a hectic few days !!!
PM me if you want any more info. As I say, can't help with the storage, but I would definately go back to Adeva if I needed another van.0 -
Use Freecycle as suggested. You are likely to get boxes very easily however you have to pick them up, and if advertised they go quickly.
If you have to buy packing stuff - http://cardboard-!!!!!!/ even with delivery their stuff works out cheaper then buying it from a storage place or Staples. Plus for corrugated paper you get a massive roll for £13 which would cost £45 from one of those storage places.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Ive looked at a few packaging companies and find https://www.homemoverboxes.co.uk slightly cheaper than this company. There are a few others slightly cheaper than this but if you live in cheshire, gtr manc or merseyside they deliver for free so I think we'll stick to this unless anyone has any better ideas.

We are selling our house to a first time buyer:j and have to complete on 1 August. He is too good to loose:D Unfortunately our new property cannot be completed until mid September at the latest so we have to put our furniture into storage. Does anyone know of any short term rental companies preferably in the midlands but this is not important. Or does any MSE member have a house they want to rent for four weeks or so?

Any help and advice would be appreciated:beer:To Dare is To Do:beer:0 -
Stockport isn't my area so can't give direct help but speaking more generally:
It's best to visit the storage place first and have a good look round. See how clean and watertight it is, those flat roofed sheds can often leak. Also check for how it's ventilated and what is allowed to be stored, you don't want something nasty stored next door.
For boxes, check if they are single walled or double walled. If you are piling the bigger ones up high you want double walled for strength so the pile doesn't tip over. Also don't buy too big I find 18 inches about the biggest for comfortable holding and carrying trough doors.0 -
