My dogs acted like they didnt know me after collecting from kennels

If only that were true!
I agree that pet sitters are a better option and give more individual care but in our area the petsitter costs are also a heck of a sight more. Kennels can start from £8 a day, my petsitter is £20 a day.
I guess it's very regional. Round here kennels are £10-£12 per day and sitters around £15 so it's not a great deal more for a lot more comfort.“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

dibuzz how did your spaniel react to you picking him/her up, my dogs took a good 10 seconds to realise who i was, it hurt me alot
Don't worry! It's really quiet normal, I used to work in stray kennels and have seen it again and again. The owner would come to collect their lost dog and when brought out of the kennels the dog would give them a quick glance and then carry on walking past....... and then you'd see the penny drop as they realized who the person was and go and greet them.

It's not uncommon for dogs to sleep lots when they get home too, life in kennels is very hectic compared to home life and the stress of being away from home and 'on watch' for all the new and exciting things happening around them just wear them outSome days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0 -
Our old rottie girl would have a husky bark after we left her in kennels. I can only think the poor love spent ages barking. Breaks my heart to think about it now.
Our current two have never been in kennels (apart from their period in rescue) and Im pretty determined they wont go to a kennel, no matter how much everyone tells me they will be ok and how restrictive it makes holidays. Which it does, particularly with Ralph being disabled.
However, we are taking them on hols to Cornwall with us this year and as we want to go to a few places that wont allow dogs Ive been searching for day creches and found two very good ones. One run by a vet where three of the rooms look just like living rooms rather than the normal runs and so on. I reckon they will be ok there for a few hours, probably quite enjoy it but leaving them longer, I really cant imagine being able to do it.0 -
my sisters boxer would sulk if she left him (with her OHs parents for more than a day). He wouldnt look at her or respond to her in any way! and the time she had to leave him for a week........he punished her for days!0

My dog (puppy) escaped our garden and walked himself to tesco, where he was picked up by a lovely local family, who took him home with them then called me on the number on his tag.
I went to collect him (all in the space of 30 mins) and he didn't recognise me.
I apologised if he may have been sick in their car (he is always sick in my car) but he did't vomit in their car.
Then he ran out their front door down the road and ignored me calling him back.
Very embrassing.
I followed him across the park, round the corner and back to our front door. I opened the door and then he was very happy to see me!
I changed his name from P.K. to Eric, he responds much better to Eric for some reason.0 -
The story about a lost dog forgetting their owner reminded me of this funny cartoon.
OP don't worry I'm sure your dogs were just disorientated, they still love you!0 -
my springer went to a 'lovely' kennels the first time we left her - and was upset by it. she didnt sulk exactly - she just wasnt herself, very clingy when we took her home. we found her new kennels (we had to be sure she was happy as we couldnt take her with us on weeks away). the first time she was there she was very unhappy going in - and equally unhappy on coming out! she loved it there!
from then on - she would be ecstatic at being dropped off! she must have had a marvellous time with them! they used to breed springers so understood her.
they had a drop at home service so one time I was waiting for her..........and waiting......and eventually rang to them ask where she was - and it was so funny.
teen on other end of phone 'its megs mum - we were supposed to take her home today'?
muffled but still legible on the other end 'oh !!!!!! - she is curled up with (thier dogs) tell her we will drop her off later - or in the morning if she doesnt mind - no charge!.'
by this time I am giggling - 'No - I dont mind, meg can have a sleepover with her friends'!
just find the right place for yours. Then they will only sulk cos they miss thier mates!0
