If you moved to a cheaper house, would your the benefits you receive reduce accordingly, therefore negating any cost savings?

Hi, welcome to the debt free wannabe board! Have you spoken to CCCS or someone similar about your situation?

You say your ex isn't paying child support, have you contacted the Child Support Agency? Are you sure you are getting all the benefits you are entitled to? Taking benefits might seem like a hard thing to do, but remember this is why you paid taxes when you used to work, and why you will continue to pay taxes when you have a job, in addition to all the hidden taxes you still pay (ie VAT, fuel duty etc).

  • No I dont think they will, I receive housing benefit to the value of an average "two bedroomed" house, as the council say my two could share, even though boy and girl, this amount does not cover my rent, and I currently have to pay a £150 a month shortfall on the rent (another thing my ex said he would actually pay!! But hasnt) So it would incur a saving if I found a cheaper house :)

He is self employed, yet hasnt worked for months. I spoke to my solicitor about it during the divorce proceedings as she said if I took it to CSA, I still wouldnt get anything out of him. As far as I know, he doesnt even have a proper home, he lost his flat, coz he didnt pay the rent!! and has been dossing on peoples spare rooms since

I have spoken to national debtline, business debtline, CCCS and have a telephone interview tomorrow with Payplan

  • Hi sorry cant really help with your soa but just wanted to say I have been in a very similar situation and can truly understand how bleak it all seems especially when the ex wont take ANY responsibility for the situation or resolving it. All I can say is things will get better sorry I cant help more :(

  • Have you included the amount that the council pay for your rent in your income on your SOA? I'm just asking because if you haven't you can change the rent amount to £150 as that's what you pay yourself. x

You might want to register a claim with the CSA. You might not get anything *now*, but as soon as he starts to work you will get 20% of his take home pay for his kids. If he is on benefits you can get something, even if it is £5/month to help.

A DMP will take a long time to pay off your debts, but many of them are small so if you can save up a little bit you can reduce the number of debts significantly.

I noticed you have a National Insurance debt - is this for your self-employed business? - if so you can register an exemption if you earn under about £5k a year - this might be worth looking into at least until you earn more.
