Don't forget to take into account the fact that a big comfy car will be fine for getting there but once you're off the autostrada and onto normal roads you'll be bu99ered.;)

I have driven in Italy on all kinds of roads in a BMW 528i and 520i, so that is not a worry.
  • Buy a Rover 420 SDI around 98-99 ish
It will not break down, it will always start, it will give you 50+ mpg and it will give you little grief.
and it will set you back about £500 tops
If you fancied driving to China and back, Id go in this - because you will get there and back easily without opening the Bonnet at all.

It is 650 miles from where I live in Kent to get to Tours in France (I know because I have done it twice), so it must be at least 850 miles from Yorkshire to Tours;)
I certainly would not like to drive for 12 hours non stop.

I was going by Google Maps...
Are you going the scenic route round Paris? I go down the coast to Rouen then to Evreaux, Dreux, Chartres, Chateudun, Vendome as I like driving through the countryside and not permanently stuck on autoroutes.

Really? The nearest dual carriageway to me is over 20 miles away, the nearest motorway 30 miles. Most of my normal mileage is on single country A roads with a once weekly 40 mile round trip down a windy B road and unclassified single track one. The Mondeo has no issues.
