problem with eon

Options
Hi, I've been with eon for yrs and got into debt with them a couple of yrs ago. As a result I have a prepayment meter. I am putting £45 per wk on electri (£6 taken for debt) and £35 on gas per wk (again £6 taken for debt). Altogether I'm paying £320 per month into the machines. I live in a 2 bed cottagen have no swimming pool just the standard things. I have gas central heating (on timed 2 times per day) . I have speoken to them this morning and they said my usage is high so don't use the dishwasher (once per day currently) and basically that's that. They said my usage has always been high? We have 1 tv, work all day so nothing left on. What can I do as I cannot change supplier due to debt and have a small child so have to keep house warm and light. I have energy saving lightbulbs, a new energy saving washer and gas central heatingm

Your gas is fairly normal but your electric is very high. How do you heat water? Do you have an immersion heater to heat water? Do you have an electric shower? Do you have any electric heating of any sort? Do you use a dryer to dry clothes? How often?

Changing supplier won't make much difference. The cheapest supplier according to my calculator is £2 a week cheaper and that's due to your very high electric usage. If you used a more normal £20 a week on the electric plus the £6 debt then E-on becomes one of the cheapest and you could save £1 a week by switching. You would save a lot more by finding the high energy using devices and switching them off. You might need to take hourly/daily meter reading until you find it.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

The Gas could be about right for this time of year, and should drop hugely as the weather improves.
However £39 pw, (+ £6 for debt), on Elec. seems way over the top as this will only reduce by appx. 20% in Summer - are you supplementing the gas CH with Elec. fires ?

Responders on the site will have to know your annual Gas/Elec consumptions in Kwh to help, but Eon will tell you these if you ask, and unless you have had a recent statement from them showing how much debt is still outstanding, ask them for one

    Hi sally1975

Thank you to both dogshome and HappyMJ, good advice and info given already.

Agree with the others the electricity usage here is high, the average electric usage is 3300 kWh per year.

It is worth taking daily readings for a period of time, also you can ask us for an energy monitor, although these are not always 100% accurate they do help to identify periods of high usage.

I would also have a word with our consumption department as they are specialised in this area. It's a good idea to have a week of readings, a list of all your electric appliances and when these are used to help them.

Is there any possibility that an immersion switch is on? Or something along these lines.

Let me know if you need any help from me.

    Helena :)
