is this reasonable?

Hi, my son is 17 and about to learn to drive. We have been quoted to have him on my insurance would cost £1138.43. I drive a suzuki wagonR (under 1000cc)
To have his own insurance would be in excess of £2000.Is this reasonable do you think?

There are far too many criteria used in pricing for anyone to be able to say.

Just make sure you arent doing a fronted policy - ie if he is to be the main driver he must be declared as such, online most insurers assume that the policyholder is to be. Insuring yourself as the main driver with him only as an additional driver if he is the main driver would be fraud.

  • Hi there!

Sounds far too much to me. I worked in insurance for a couple of years (for a well known 'expensive' insurer and our quotes for young drivers weren't usually this much.

Insurers quote on different criteria and the reason that adding your son onto your own policy is so expensive may be that your own insurer prefers only for 'safe' drivers with a good no claims bonus history. If this is the case, then they would quote for an additional young driver but would raise the premium to such heights that it is inpractical (and therefore you wouldn't consider insuring a young driver with them! - so is effectively the same as them declining to quote for a young driver).

A good site to look at is https://www.confused.com (I saved £400 on the policies for both my cars this year with this site!) and also if you look in the Yellow Pages there are insurers who deal specifically with young drivers or drivers without no claims bonus - these are often a lot cheaper than the standard insurers as they don't tend to deal with premiums under £600 per year and make their money back on the young drivers who don't have bumps in their cars.

I hope this helps! Best of luck to your son for his driving lessons!!

Thanks for the replies! I asked for him to be a named driver on my insurance. We use a small local independent broker for our insurance and they are usually very reasonable IMHO. They did say it was more expensive because we have 2 cars in the family:confused: even though we are only asking for him to drive mine. I will have a look at confused.com.Thanks again:T

edited to say I can save loads by using confused! cheapest quote just over £700 so thanks a lot!
