Cost of installing wood burning stove

Options
Am looking into installing a wood burning stove in our Victorian Terrace.

We have had a company come out and have a look at the existing fireplace and chimney and have been quoted £1700 to do the work to the fireplace, and putting a flue liner in. Thats not including the cost of the stove.

I appreciate the cost may vary but does anyone have any ideas about what is a reasonable price to pay?

Thanks so much xx

  • I didn't need the flue lined as chimney was OK but old gas fire was taken out and some work done to create smoke box above fire and liner put in up to that point. Also work on cowling. Total was £1800 including the stove.

Thanks Herman munster, theres no old fire in situ but there is quite a bit to do to the hearth

  • From other quotes we got and people I spoke to, the most expensive bit was lining the chimney - the stuff itself costs a lot and it takes quite a bit of time to do.

Get several quotes, that'll tell you the going rate in your area. I was quoted £1200 to install a stove and liner, in a bungalow, with the stove cost extra. I will get more quotes.

    Hi

We already had our Coalbrookdale stove from our old house. In the new one we had an opening just the right size for our stove. We needed someone to supply and install a 125mm x 10m liner, a new cowling for the top and the registry plate for the bottom and of course fit our old stove.

We had extremely varying quotes a couple of years ago from £1,000 upwards, in fact the most expensive was a recommended to us builder, for £1,500 he would do the work but he couldn't sign it off! We had to get someone else to do that part. We decided to leave it for a while until we were recommended to call our local firm of chimney sweeps as they also do installs. I gave them a call on a Tuesday a couple of weeks ago, got their quote then on the Friday afternoon they turned up to do the job, no trouble, all done, all signed off properly and working beautifully. £740 all in!

So I would say try contacting a local sweep as they may know a good fitter at reasonable rates if they don't do installs themselves.

    Good luck
