The whole thing is a con and it's up to the public to seize the initiative. What retailer will turn down a sale over 5p in the current climate?
  • If i bring my own bags do i get 5p for everyone for being a clever boy?
  • Totally agree with you BigAl.

Will be interesting to see how home delivered shopping from the likes of Tesco and Asda will arrive now. Asda currently bring me more bags than I would ever use instore.

Government policy or not I think its counter prodcutive. For example I used to buy a load of stuff in M&S. Now they want 5p per bag I go less often and only buy the 1 or 2 things I went for rather than being sucked in by their offers. So they are losing money on me as I used to be in there about 3 times per week spending on average £30 per time. Now its about once a week spending about £10.

I will not be carrying a supply of bags nor will I be paying for them. If necessary I will just use the basket to carry the items to the car then leave it straight back. :rotfl: :rotfl:

BigAl you're still missing the point, the retailer has no choice in the matter, they can't give a free bag end of.

As I already said I live in Wales where it's already in place and I work in a shop, I'm not just speculating on how it will work I'm dealing with it everyday. It's only been in place a few months and it's already second nature to everyone to take bags everywhere.

Look at it this way, you come into my shop and demand a free bag, I give in and let you have one, I get caught, I get a fine, the company gets a fine and I lose my job.......all to save a complete stranger 5p. Good luck getting anyone to do that for you ::)

And it is also paper bags.

The money has to go to a charity or a green venture. The company I work for is keeping it all back until the end of the financial year and then it will be split between causes. My local shop put their 5ps in a Ty Hafan collection pot so it's helping sick children. Are you really going to make a scene and refuse to let money go to charity because you can't be bothered to take your own bags?

While I am happy to accept a free paper bag (recycled of course) if any retailer tries to charge me an extra 5p for a bag they will be politely told that the deal is off!!!

Are you actually serious?? Carry reuseable bags with you save the environment. Its probably folk like you that get a shooping load of plastic bags and they go straight in the bin when you get home. Plastic bags should be reused numerous times, only time we ever throw one out is when we put the fire ashes out. We have 2 cupboards at home full of them. My wife has a fold up bad soze of 2 fingers she keeps constantly in her purse and when we go food shopping we take our heavy duty bags everytime.

5p...about f..ing time too, will stop ppl being lazy

Full details of the Welsh scheme can be found here. I'm assuming the NI scheme will be run along similar lines.

Hope this makes you feel better. I live in Wales and we sing this before leaving the house so we never forget to take our bags! It only took a few days to get used to. I do sometimes have to buy the odd bag, but very very rarely, and I've freed up a whole drawer in my kitchen!

My Ocado shop comes in bags, which they then collect to recycle the following time.
