To put the costs of gas v electric into perspective, with gas my whole house can be kept at 19/20 deg 24/7 with as much hot water as I can use for the same price as having a 1 bar electric fire on 24/7.
  • Yeah. Gas is much more efficient for heating. Not as good for lighting but good for heating.
  • Spoke to a fairly helpful man at EON who said that it did seem really high compared to previous usage but he's as confused as me (though it's seeming more like the fire could be the culprit!) - he's sending me an EnergyFit kit thing to help monitor usage and has given some options as to payment.

It still doesn't get me away from the fact I have to pay a £400 bill though:(

Ah right! Currently sat in the house with nothing but laptop and light on, wearing a big jumper :-)

Maybe plug these into the laptop to stay cosy!

If you switch from quarterly billing to monthly DD, your payments will be evened out across the year. You'll also be able to access more online discount tariffs, which usually require monthly DD payment.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Yes, ask them if you can switch to a monthly direct debit, then set up an online account and submit your readings once a month. This will make everything much easier to track.
