no problem MSE ANDREA, but we dont want mser's reading this thread, and thinking it is as simple as the op is trying to make out it is, there are alot of legal requirements to be put into place, before you can start advertising etc...

I know alot of HC firms around here have done their own police checks on themselves, to prove to potential clients that they are trustworthy etc... thats how bad its got with the fly-by-nights...

I think i have put my honest advice over to other mse'rs reading this thread, as i would hate someone to take the ops advice and end up have huge fines for not applying to the legal requirements needed

  • I put up a post earlier about this asking some advice.

    I have looked into this.
There are licences and to get one from the Environment Agency you should be clear of convictions for tipping. This is a licence to be a waste carrier.
There will be public liability insurance and the usual van insurances.

I do not see how someone say clearing an office out of furniture (as seen on The Apprentice) would be breaking the law straight off without a waste licence. Office furniture is not controlled waste if for example you sold it on at a auction room.

Irrespective of that, there isn't a mountain of paperwork and licences to work through, but there is some paperwork and licencing.

I notice the OP does not advertise.
    I imagined that contacting:
    Solicitors
    Estate and Letting Agents
    Funeral Directors

Additionally I would imagine having a website with a landline/email contact would help.

might be helpful, especially the first two. These are the people who will want to get hold of the registered people where there are no come back and Mrs Bradley (deceased) belongings aren't scattered down the local country lanes.

Any advice on how to get started would be appreciated.

there are diff degrees of waste,

basically anything that is unwanted is classed as waste.

you also need to keep a paper chain from cradle to the grave of 'every' item you collect

A waste carriers license is less than £150 for the first 3 years anyway, so is not exactly a Bank-buster. Van insurance will automatically cover you for business use (speaking as someone who spent 2 days trying to find a company prepared to insure my van for 'Social, domestic and pleasure' only, and failing).

Business insurance can be bought as a combined policy, just make sure you are careful as to what you put-down as your occupation, or you could end-up paying through the nose.

  • Just a quick reply to the post above, as someone who works for a van insurance broker, van insurance does not automatically cover you for business use, especially for house clearance. If you are insure a van for this you will need Haulage use and not Carriage of Own goods. This is something that has been enforced by the police and not the insurers themselves, so please be careful if this is something you are considering. I have seen many policies cancelled over the last few months because of this, and if not insured properly can result in 6 points and a £200 fine, which I don't want to see anyone getting. I must state aswell that haulage use insurance can be very expensive in comparison so if anyone is considering this do your homework as I am often quoting four figure quotes even with full no claims bonus. Don't want to put too much of a dampener on this one because with the right planning I think it is a very good idea, as I speak to many people everyday who do house clearance who have been very successful, but make sure you are covered first. Hope this is of some help.
