its ok just something in my head,,are nhs more intrested in money than treatment, with NICE not allowing drugss that treat illness ,because of the cost,,saw a doc on holby city saying that..is our nhs the same?

Yes of course they take cost into account. If you had a magic pill that could cure cancer, but it would cost £1 billion per person, NICE would not approve it - where would the money come from? You can't just print more money, that's not how it works.

You will get individuals in any field that are motivated by money rather than the wellbeing of others, but on the whole NHS employees are motivated by the right reasons.

Humphrey10 is correct about NICE, cost is an implication in what treatments are available to patients - it has to be.

surley if there was a magic pill to cure ie cancer, the person would be able to make an input to society,so eventually tthe cost would break even,hop4efully find a cur for MS and get my health back
  • Hi Colin - Ive got to say some of these programmes do make me wonder about whats really going on at times but they are also designed to make people react that way (scaremongering). Luckily a bad apple in a system this big can normally only get so far without being found out, and in the NHS there a lot of people whos job is to check that individuals are not letting the power go to their heads and are staying within the guidelines... MS can be terrible, but they are making new breakthroughs every day. So we can only hope... In the meantime remember that soaps go for these controversial storylines to get people wound up, and therefore talk about it. So dont worry too much and just try and make the best of things mate! All the best and good luck - Scott :)

actually you can and they do just print money, when it suits them, ever heard of quantative easing all £200 billion of it?

Colin - Holby City is a soap. It bears no more relation to reality than Dr Who.

I don't watch Holby City I prefer Casualty for a right good old laugh.

I have yet to be in a hospital A&E with that many medics around.

I go on average every 7/8 weeks normally in the early hours via ambulance. Normally there are maybe three/four medics on duty and the hospital is the main trauma centre for the county!

As for the nursing staff being that concerned as they appear on the programme, with patient's personal issues, it never happens.

Most A&E's, wards etc are understaffed and overworked.
Is it any wonder that the patients look forward to visiting time when it is generally the only time when they see someone that will talk to them and listen.

I was in hospital on one occasion for 10 weeks. I refused to eat the crap put in front of me for the whole of that time! I just laid in bed sleeping, eventually unable to even get out of bed to go to the toilet.
They ended up putting a central line in (for other reasons as well) and started to force feed me direct into my blood.
Left in there I would have died. Went from 13st to under 9st.

It was only the consultant that told the nursing staff to discharge me. It took weeks before I could stand up.

So all of the caring you see on the TV just does not happen in real life.
  • colin, cost has to come into it somewhere along the line.
there is only one certainty in life and that is that we will all die at some point. no amount of money or drugs will prevent that.
therefore there has to be a cost factor involved as to whether that life can be extended and to be of good quality to warrant it. it cannot just be on that one illness either in my opinion, eg my dad had leukemia and was 70 years old, where it could be treated in other cases as he was not a well man and had already lived out the majority of a average lifespan, it wasnt in the best interests to try.
