30th Birthday Surprise?

My housemate turns 30 in February. :j
She's just moved to where we live (about three weeks ago, and very far from home!), so doesnt have many friends yet. She was hoping her boyfriend would be here to visit that week, but he's delayed his trip until later in the month.
She hasnt made plans for the day itself, so I'd like to do something nice to mark a big-ish day.
I knew her in the UK (so since before she moved here) and we get on well. Unfortunately have never met her boyfriend so co-conspiring is difficult!
I was thinking of maybe surprising her with a posh breakfast, along with a birthday card and small gift? Its a Saturday, so we could help arrange anything she wants to do on the day itself, perhaps lounging by a pool somewhere.
Another option would to have the gift be a spa voucher, though that might be a bit boring to do alone. I suppose she could hold on to it until her boyfriend comes later in the month.
Any ideas? I'd feel strange organizing a party when it would essentially be for my friends rather than hers!

Hi there
Lovely idea! I get the impression from what you wrote that your flatmate is from overseas?
As someone who moved from one side of the world t'other just before my 30th, I would have been thrilled if I'd had someone to make a bit of a fuss about it!
If my assumption is correct, is there something special/unique to your location which you could use as a day out? Eg, if you were in London, the London Eye, or a glass of bubbles at Tower 42? As you've written that you knew her from the UK, I'm guessing you're not in London, but is a good example!
Whatever you decide, I'm sure she'll really appreciate the gesture as well as having someone to make a fuss of her on a special day when she's likely to be missing friends & family...
edit - just saw that you're in Kampala... I've only been there once myself, but is there a hotel there with a nice pool area which you could get a 'day pass' for - have a nice lunch, swim, cocktail or two?

Can you get any of her favourite UK treats? Crisps, sweets etc that she loves, but can't usually get there? Always goes down well with me.
Otherwise, do you have any photos of her and her family, or of you two together, that you could get printed and framed?
The spa sounds nice. I have no problem going on my own (I prefer it!), so I think it depends on the person.
One of my friends turned 30 today, and she also got some jokey presents - think big granny knickers, tena pads, anusol, dulcolax, dentures, hair dye for covering grey hairs etc. She does have a good sense of humour though! Would your friend find something like that funny?
God, I still need to figure out what to do for mine in November. People have been asking me since last year!!!!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Breakfast is a great idea
When I stayed in Kampala a friend was leaving and she arranged a champagne breakfast at the Serena. It was amazing! It not something I would ever normally do but it was such a wonderful treat. :A :heartpuls June 2014 / £2014 in 2014 / £735.97 / 36.5%0 -
Amazing idea, Lara! I'll look into that and see if they still do it. could easily be combined with a pool day a'la toxi.
Happy nearly 30th, Euronoris! I do like the UK care package idea, I'll see what I can pull together.
OH is turning 30 in May as well so its a packed year! I think if I got him dentures he would actually cry then leave me on the spot :PMortgage free by 30:eek:: £28,000/£100,000

Amazing strapless dress for her may be will give her a surprise. you had better select a bright and special dress for her.
Does anyone else find this suggestion odd? I don't think I have ever bought any of my friends a strapless dress as a gift!

Are you able to get in touch with any of her family or boyfriend? I know he has said he is postponing his visit but what if he is wanting to give a great 30th surprise and the 'can't make it' is just a cover?
It'd be a shame for you to go to such lengths then someone else waltzes in and takes her out on that day.
