Eon - trouble over meter readings

Hi guys,
Been in a rented property since sept 2011 & took all the meter readings the day I moved in & set up direct debits etc.
Just had my first estimated reading bill & had a bit of a shock. As I am in a flat, there are two separate gas meters & just my luck ive read the wrong one!
The reading for the wrong meter was 29568 & now 32096 - my actual meter is estimated as 14833 & I have today read it as 25332
Eon say they haven't had the reading from the old tenants & I'm just checking if my landlord took one before I moved in.
Am I liable for the debt? I live on my own, work full time, don't have heating on unless I switch it on for a few hours a night, only have a gas hob as the oven is electric & have an electric shower. Surely I can't be using lots of gas.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Letting agent should have taken meter reading on the day you moved in and should also have taken reading the day the old tenant left.
Contact your agent - ask for the readings.0 -

Hi chescadanielle
I’m really pleased that this has been picked up on after your first bill and that you’ve had a Direct Debit set up to cover most of your use so far.
The problem now seems to lie with the meter reading we have from when you moved in being from the wrong meter, did we estimate instead?
It sounds like it needs changing either way and hopefully your landlord will have the right one, are they responsible for the other flat too?
I’m sorry if I’m getting this wrong, was 14833 what we estimated your current reading to be and it’s really 25332, if so what start reading did we use?
If it is the start reading that’s been estimated or even if it’s clearly from the wrong meter we can look at re-estimating for you.
We might have some old ones on record that will help. These will be based on the previous tenants use though, so try reading your meter every day and making a note of the readings. That way we can work out how much you use on average per day and use this to estimate a new September reading.
See what your landlord can do to help and then get back in touch so we can look at correcting your bill.

When I rang to set up a direct debit when I first moved in, I was told the up to date reading wasn't needed, so kept a note of it for future reference. (not realising I was reading the wrong one!)
The landlord is only responsible for the flat I live in, I have contacted the managing agency to ask if anyone took a meter reading as the old tenants moved out.
They were only instructed to manage the property just after I moved in (Oct as I moved in on 01 Sep) as the landlord wasn't happy with the agency I originally signed up with. The original agency won't release a copy of the file to the new agency so they don't have any meter readings.
They say they will contact the Landlord directly to see if they have any information about meter readings.
so, at the moment I am just waiting for a reply, but I will be monitoring it every day and have an EON meter reader booked to come and see me on 08 Feb.
I'm just frustrated 'cos it always seems to happen to me!0
