Alternative to Catsan?

Hello OS'ers....can you help?

I have 2 cats and use a large bag of Catsan cat litter each week. It's just short of £10 for a big bag and so its rather expensive. I don't like the 'clumping' cat litter as I find it smells REALLY bad after its been used. And I end up with chalky paw prints all over the tiles. Catsan seems to absorb the smells quite well and I dont end up with the residue.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a cheaper alternative - either a brand or homemade-type?

How much are you putting in? My cat came from the RSPCA rescue centre, and they only had the bottom of the tray covered. That's what I do, and he seems to manage okay! I use the wooden pellet one. A 20kg sack from Pets at home is £9.99 and lasts me two to three months woth one cat.

Catsan is £9 from the supermarket. I only use a centimetre or 2 of it. It lasts about 3 days then gets changed. The entire 20 litre bag lasts for about 1 month maybe 6 weeks.

  • because I have 2 cats I take out the dirty bits every day but have to change the whole lot every other day. Perhaps I just need to economise on the amount I'm putting in! I still think doing that I'm probably going to use a 20 litre bag every 10 days-2 weeks though.

Hilstep- do you find the wooden pellet stuff hides smells? The litter tray is in the dining room (only place we can put it) and so I am very conscious of it not ponging.

My cat also uses catsan and wont use anything else . If your cats are not as fussy you could use fish gravel as this can be rinsed to get the urine out & the faeces can be picked out. I would replace it about once a month. Also I have a mat I got from Pets at Home (think I was about £3 or 4 for it) which stops the litter from getting about your house, think of it as a rubber doormat.

    Hope that helps

We used to buy Lidl's brand coshida 10kg. Its fullers earth cat lit so soaks up smells really well. Cannot remember the price but it wasn't that much and we usually go for cheaper but quality.

We don't use it any more as i trained the cat to go in a certain place in our garden. I did it by emptying the cat lit outside where i wanted him to go he quickly got the idea. Then a week of so later indoor box vanished for him!. He still will use it if we go away which is handy.

I've switched from catsan to tesco's value - I find it a fair bit more dusty (no problem once it's in the tray though) and I think there is slightly more pong, but not enough to switch back to catsan!! I now buy a tub of deoderiser from pets at home or jolleys and no problems. I put in about 2" deep litter in a covered litter tray, changed once per week for one cat.

We use Catsan and have 2 cats with 2 litter trays. One of my cats is extremely fussy and when i changed from catsan he started using his bed as his new cat litter tray........ I tend to get friends who have a Costco cards to get me the cat litter from there, a couple of bags at a time as its about £8 in there.

I change both litter trays weekly (fishing out poo as soon as its left for me!) but only put a thin layer and a bag lasts me at least 3 - 4 weeks.

I would love to change to a cheaper one but am worried that we'll get the bed incidents again.

Here's your alternative, although you'd better order plenty of Andrex (other toilet paper's available).
