adding ram to a laptop

I want to add some ram to my grandaughters HP 7000 laptop running vista basic.
I have been to the Crucial website and run a check, it tells me that there is space for 1gb of ram to fit in an empty slot.
the question is. Do I need to buy 2 of the same make of ram or can I just add one of any make of ram?
thanks in advance.

As long as it has this specification: PC2-5300 667MHz 200 pin DDR2 SODIMM

    Example
  • sorry to be a bit slow but will I need to replace them as a pair or can I just order the one?
    thanks
  • Just order the one but check that there isn't actually one in there already so you don't buy a 1GB stick to replace a 1GB stick :D

It's usually recommended to replace all RAM when adding extra, so that all RAM that's fitted is from the same batch and so has the same timings etc. However if the PC is running at stock speed and timings this is probably less of an issue, but still something to bear in mind if the PC starts crashing after fitting extra RAM.

I'm sure that the 'linked to' RAM has the same spec as the fitted RAM.
  • Just an update.
fitted the one ram board as recommended by "take this" and it has really speeded up the laptop. Its the first computer part I have replaced
thanks every one for their input.

If you buy from Crucial then it is guaranteed to be compatible. Last week I had the very rare case of a RAM mismatch, called Crucial and they sent a replacement module which was delivered 9am the next morning. 3 days later the original part was RMA'd and a credit received.
Crucial are certainly not the cheapest, but the service is first rate.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
