Direct Debit increases

Options
I received my gas bill recently, EDF, and even though I was in credit and going through a mild winter they had upped my direct debit from £50 to £90 per month. I wrote to them and they have dropped it again but is this just a scam to get lots of money in their coffers and collect the interest. Please check your bills and don't just keep paying.

  • I signed up for green electricity from Scottish power through Uswitch in mid November (and have just received the champagne this week). They said on the price comparison that my direct debits would drop from £37.50 to £35.00 per month and I received a refund from my previous supplier on switching. Scottish Power have now said that because my electricity use was high from mid december to mid february they are going to raise my direct debit to £87.50 per month. I phoned and questioned why there was no information about this possibility initially. They have said they are entitled to raise the direct debit to cover the amount I use (based on dec to feb) plus a percentage to recover what I have already used. So much for cheaper electric!
They have also put a surcharge on my bill for green electricity when they said originally it was the same price as the normal stuff. Why is it OK for them to do this?
  • I use ebico which is southern electric, and I only pay £20 each per month for gas and electric. I am a low user, although I dont know why I live in a 24/7 house, but my gas was £60 and the electric was £130 which isnt bad, so I guess it will right itself in the summer months when I wont use half as much.
    maybe think about swapping.
