Had my house insurance cancelled...

I'm looking for some advice plz, this time last year I was in big financial trouble and couldn't afford to pay my contents insurance (I did eventually pay up the outstanding owed and they cancelled my policy). Now I'm in a better position and able to afford insurance again, but I'm not sure I'll be able to get quotes off the net etc?

I know not having insurance aint clever.... so I started looking around but as soon as I tick the box saying I've had insurance cancelled in the past, I get various messages saying @SORRY@....

Will I be able to take advantage of the cashback deals on quidco?

Any help is appreciated, thanku

I suggest you go to a broker and explain the reason for cancellation.
  • A standard question in all on-line quotes is 'have you ever had a policy cancelled.....' - no point lying as it will just give cause for refusal should you need to claim. Try putting 'yes' & see what happens, or, as oldwiring says, try a broker.
  • I'd never lie on insurance application, you just know it'd come back and bite you on the bum eventually lol.

What do you mean by a broker tho, is that different to going direct to an insurer?

    Thanku :D

Direct insurers deal with the "prime"/ mainstream customers - ones that are straight forward and can all be handled by a computer. Sub-prime/ non-mainstream customers often require an actual underwriter to have a look at the risk someone represents and work out a suitable premium. As the market is much smaller and their target customer base tends to be very tight it generally isnt cost effective for these insurers to carry the exceptionally high marketing costs involved with being a direct insurer, the manpower to answer all the calls from people that start at A and go through to Z calling every insurer in the yellow pages etc. Therefore these types of insurers tend instead to sell through brokers instead who will screen customers and only refer appropriate ones and then the broker only has to be paid if they actually sell a policy.

  • So that means going through a site like confused.com?

You can try confused as for motor at least they do ask the question about cancellation but remember that they only list a small proportion of the insurers/ brokers out there - doing a mock quote it only returns a few insurers that will touch someone with a previous cancelled policy too (havent been through to double check that there isnt a faulty assumption so some of them may not be viable even after declaring the cancellation)

and more locally there are Yellow Pages. Face to face rather than over an internet connection or phone is sometimes a good thing if one has problems.

TBH I do not think you should aimfor the cheapest but the cheapest you can get with your cicumstances.
