Need help with my tax! Am I being taxed correctly??

Hello!

I am a little confused with my income tax!

I recently left my full time job in November 2011 to start a new life in Devon. I was out of work untill recently. I am now temping full time. I am getting paid weekly at this temp job and received my first pay slip on Friday.

There is a duduction on £180 under "Tax rebate held"?? What is this?

I'm worried I'm not going to be taxed correctly. I have given them my P45 so surely it must all be ok?

Can someone tell me in basic terms what I should be taxed?

Thanks very much!

747L is the normal code for most people

firstly : is there any letters or numbers after the 747L like M1 or W1 or noncum or anything at all

seondly ; if you would like to post up the figures from your payslip we could help futher
    e.g.
    total pay to date
    total tax paid to date
    this weeks pay
    this weeks tax
    week number

As has been said check with your employer.
It was the case many years ago that a rebate due, above a certain amount, on a first payday coiuld not be made untill authorised by the tax office.
To get a better idea of what is happening can you give full details of the payslip gross tax net tax basis (usually shows after code) gross to date tax to date previous gross previous tax.

297 gross less 18.96 NI gives a net of 278.04 but you quote 228.04 have you mistyped a figure?

Assuming that it is a mistype then it does look like your employer is operating the old system of holding tax rebates over a certain figure which from memory was stopped about twenty years ago.

Just to confirm that the rebate is correct is the P45 that you handed in from your employment in November and you have had no taxable income eg jobseekers benefit in between this job and the current job?

I've just been informed by the agency that the tax rebate shouldnt of been held back so I will be receiving that back this week on top of my pay.

And no, I didnt claim job seekers or do any other type of work in between this job and the job I left in november.

    But that £228.04 is correct
