Toilet won't stop running!

Options
Hi all, hoping someone can help - this is literally keeping me up at night! The bathroom toilet was last flushed at least 8 hours ago, but there is still a gradual trickle of water coming down into the back of the bowl and it's driving me nuts as it means the tank is still making noise! I would be tempted to have a look at what's going on in the tank but I can't even get the lid off (it's one of those that's all in one above the seat with a button in the top to flush).

We're in a flat and funnily enough our neighbour mentioned they too have a noisy toilet too. We have another toilet we could use but that obviously isn't going to stop this, plus costing us a small mortgage in water bills I should imagine! Any ideas what this could be?

  • May be a faulty stop !!!! or the overflow may have shifted slightly - to be honest, you'd need to get into it to see.

With mine, I press and hold down the flush buttons and then unscrew the sleeve that the buttons sit in. Then the top lifts off.

The ring round the flush button will rotate and release the lid or you have to prise the button(s) out to reveal a scew that you can undo and them remove the lid plus part of the flush valve.

Either the diaphragm in the fill valve is nerfed and its passing OR the float is incorrectly adjusted. In both cases the cistern is overfilling and water is spilling over the internal overflow into the pan. Best guess on the data you've so far provided

Thanks all - 27 hours after it was last flushed it stopped! The ring doesn't twist and when I depress the flush button (split into two) I can only see two small square holes on either side of the inside of the ring, no screws. Guess I need to do some research on getting the damn thing open first! Once inside, is it fairly easy to diagnose the issue - i.e. will I end up needing a plumber? For now we'll just use the other toilet...

Its push button... Same problem as before, fill valve, flush valve washer or sticky flush mechanism.

The first time I took the top off my tank the sleeve, or ring, took quite a bit of effort to shift. If I remember rightly I eventually shifted it by laying a flannel over the buttons, pushed the buttons down with a pair of pliers, and then opened the jaws of the pliers against the sleeve and then twisted anti-clockwise as you are looking down on it.
Once it moves a little bit it is dead easy.
  • Our toilet was doing the same thing. Employed a plumber , at a cost of £80 , worked a while and then the problem reoccurred.

So i took a photograph of the insides of the cistern and took it to a local plumbing shop.

The guy was very helpful and ordered the right part for me and my husband replaced it. It was quite easy to do.

The rubber flapper at the very bottom of the cistern needs cleaning.

As 2010 says its either the rubber(silicone) that's become caked with the crep we have in our water and not sitting down properly enuf to cut off teh water or indeed, as Keystone says, it could well be the fill valve.

In order to get the buttons out you'll have to identify what make it is really so we can advise otherwise you could break it and up your costs. Can you post a picture of the buttons?

BTW Do you not have an isolation valve in the pipe to the fill valve? A silver thing with a screwdriver slot in it? None of you lot take the hiss right!
