Stick to Asus, Toshiba and Sony.
Avoid, Acer and HP at all costs!
I'm a techie engineer. I see hundreds of Acers and HP's and they always fail, build quality is garbage. I hardly ever see the others! When I do it's minor issues.
I also own a Sony and it's excellent quality.
Asus do some nice ones in your budget. The K series is nice!!
However... don't expect much performance for games from it.0 -
Samsung provide good build quality. Give a miss to advent -packard bell etc build quality not good - have a look at major retailer refurbed items both Curry's and Dell do a pretty big range of refurbed laptops - two things to concentrate on: get the best cpu you can afford, also for gaming the graphics is also important. Take a look and perhaps list those you like the look at - I'm sure that you will feedback from other posters etc.0

Anyone who calls themselves that is not. I absolutely detest the word "techie" and so does everyone I know in the industry.
I agree with Ivybridge in terms of keeping away from the cheaper Acers & HPs. I also agree with Smos585 about keeping away from the Advents and Packard Bells, and I also agree with notmyrealname about cheaper Tosh laptops.
I personally like the Samsungs too, Dell (if careful) are okay, as too are some of the latest Lenovo's.
But hey, notmyrealname, we are supposed to give Newbie's a chance, whatever one's prejudices are - I think thats what MSE says? If you don't like it, just ignore it. I'd also be interested in yr opinion about what laptops to go for?0 -
I would agree with the comment to avoid Acer's.
My son and I both bought one each three years ago. My son's failed after just under two years with a fault stopping the screen not lighting up on opening, and mine has just started doing the same thing. Also my blu-ray drive packed up after 15 months. My son paid £500 and I paid more than £700!"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". Here's a reasonable Lenovo (but cashback expires end of Jan - may be better waiting until the a Feb cashback)

if games are relativly important i would suggest looking at a AMD based system,
the main reason for this is that the intergrated graphics chipsets on AMD system are usually better than the intel ones (unless of course it has a dedicated graphics card - but this usualy ups the price significantly)
for example the ati 4250 which generally comes with the athlon x2 (simular power to the old core 2 cpus) or higher processors is of simular power the the intel hd 2000 or the intel hd 3000 which are included on the core i processors, and the intergrated graphics on the latest llano based processors (A series or the lower E2 - be careful as the E450 are not as good so do not think the E450 is the same as the E2-3000) are a lot better than even the core i intergrated graphics cardsDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
what happened to the old one?!!
