Laptop Screen Cracked :-(

in this case, the cost of a replacement screen and paying someone to do it (around £30, so £70 in total) would probably be around the same or less than the excess on making an insurance claim....ask a local independant for a quote if you supply the screen......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Do you mean that you have no home insurance at all i.e. no building insurance or contents insurance? Insane.
Your first mistake was going to PCW-they cannot repair laptops (basically they can't repair anything). Take it to a specialist local laptop repair shop who know what they are doing.
I agree with your sentiment but it's not strictly true.
While PCW are expensive they don't do repairs themselves, particularly on laptops.
Last year while between IT contracts my son took a short term contract with a local firm who are specialist PC/Laptop repairers.
It's a very professional setup that hold spare parts for all the major makes and variations of laptop sold by all sorts of high street retailers.
PCW are just one of the many resellers who send them their faulty laptops and desktops to repair.
I suspect the the in-store people only deal with the really easy stuff and fitting upgrades.
If you are going to do this yourself I think the hardest thing will be ensuring that you get the right part. There will often be different revisions of the same laptop due to availability of parts. It may be that during the lifespan of a particular laptop slightly different parts, including screens may have been used. The differences will be small but may be significant.
You need to ensure that you get exactly the right part. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
The in-store PCW people also do reinstalls. In fact, they tend to do that regardless of the actual problem. And only then do they ask you if you backed your data up...
Clearly there is no point taking a laptop into PCW only for them to sub it out a proper repair shop.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I'm sure I read a post on these forums from someone who runs a laptop repair business on eBay. I assume that he supplies parts, if he reads this thread he might be prepared to offer advice on getting the right bit.One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0

I tripped up while holding my son's laptop and went flying
along with the laptop. The outside screen is fine but when we switch it on, it shows all cracked and ink leaking type of weird thing.
I did a friends netbook a few weeks ago - similar situation where she had dropped it. The replacements are sometimes fiddly because of the small screws involved - but with careful planning (and photo's/drawings as you go if you are unsure) it is not too bad.
However - There was some damage inside (Broken screw fixings - was enough to hold the new screen but could have been a problem) - so it may be worth removing the bezel before you buy a screen to make sure nothing is loose or in pieces inside? It will also give you a chance to see if it is possible for you to do it.“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -
This will help enormously.
According to that guide, the part number you need is LK.15605.003
This is very helpful, but just word of warning. Manufacturer's do from time to time change parts - there are more than one screen with the same "generic" partno both LCD and LED screens that "fit".
To avoid hassle, it is usually better to dismantle first - on the reverse of the screen is the actual partno, just make sure you get the same, otherwise you may need to replace the video ribbon as well.
Made the mistake myself before!!0 -
Thanks everyone for all your advice and replies. After careful consideration and getting quotes from local repair shops, I decided to order a replacement screen off ebay for £40. It arrived this morning and I followed the instructions on youtube as well as reading the manual and pictures I had taken and I managed to fit it. And it is working. One very happy son and a happy mummy. Thank you so much. I don't think I would of had the courage to of done it but you gave me hope and I did!0

Wow, nice one! I half expected you to say you let PCW repair it. :eek:0
