High Rebuilding & Contents Cost

Can anyone help me get quotes for buildings and contents insurance - my current policy includes rebuild cost at £385k and contents £50k and I'm having trouble getting a quote for this year. Also it would be great if I could get some of the money from the current insurance offers.
Thanks

nellie

  • Try some of the companies that go on numbers of bedrooms, it can work out cheaper. We are with Halifax, but lots do it that way.
  • Thanks, I'll give them a go.

LiverpoolVictoria Standard Cover B: £500K, C; £125K might be another one to look at
  • Why not try some of the Mid Net Worth/High Net Worth providers. Hiscox? Chubb?

Your contents sum insured sounds out of synch with your buildings sum insured to me - how/when was this calculated?

I would not gamble my home (if it were such high value) on the desire to get £50 cash back - it is so important that you get appropriate cover.

when you say out of synch do you mean contents too much or not enough - we have had a basic £50k (5 bedrooms) cover for years while the rebuild costs increase yearly. We have lived in this house for 17 years and have always been insured with Royal & Sun Alliance they have never been in touch except to advise the premium each year.

    try a re-build cost calculator - http://www.home-cover.com/home-insurance-faqs-existing-insurer.cfm

the re-build cost does sound VERY high alongside £50k of contents.
if it's more than 10 stone, and that hairy, it's probably not a dog...it may be a wookie.

Direct Line, Privilege, Churchill etc all give you £1,000,000 of rebuild as standard. £50k is certainly not going to be an issue for contents.

but why have £1m rebuild if you dont need it? surely averages like that mean some people are paying more than they should for elaborate cover? conversely some people (ie those with a £900,000 rebuild cost) will be getting a great deal...wont they?
