last night my laptop screen dark i could just see what was on the screen but not that good i could use it. then to get it to turn off we had to remove the battery to shut it down after that it would not turn back on. we left it all night and it booted up this morning but the screen was still dark so shut it down and it wont come back on.
we replaced the power supply about a month ago due to the old one being broken
any one got any ideas

3 questions for you:
1. When you bought the new adapter did you verify that the voltage and the amperage were exactly the same as on the bottom of the laptop?
2. When the screen went dark could you see shadows of what was on the screen when you put it upto the light?
3. When you turn it on, does it sound as though it is booting up, but without any screen image?
One thing you could try, don't think it will help, but just try to remove any static build-up. Remove power by removing battery and adapter. Then press and hold down the on switch for 20 seconds. They re-attached adapter and try booting.0 -

yeah the amps and volts are good.
i could see whats on the screen but its like a light has gone of lol
when i try to boot up when i connect the power cable there is no sign of life even when i press the power button
i tryed the to remove the static but it didnt help
thanks0 -
Both symptoms appear to be possibly power related - dark screen is typical of an inverter issue (this raises the voltage from 19v to that required to drive the screen).. Not starting can be many things but one of which is also power.
Can you, if not already done try and recreate the symptoms with the battery removed , ie just power from the adapter. - just eliminating a possible battery fault
Do yoi know how old the lappie is? Is it xp or vista?0 -
yeah the battery has always been an issue but i have tried doing it all with the battery pack removed its had windows 7 installed its about 3-4yrs old it was my mother in laws an now i use it for business and all my contacts are on it god have i learnt a hard lesson should have it backed up on a external hard drive grrr0

It's not the end of the world, you can still retrieve your data.
If you remove the hard-drive and put it into a caddy the data can be read off on another computer. You can buy cheap caddys on auction sites.
It's possible that the backlight may have gone. Can you make out the text/desktop on the screen? If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
yeah i know about the caddys and stuff thanks tho i think where the screen is concerned i think you are right but the fact its not booting is the main concern i have
:):)

The Op said he can sometimes, but othertimes it won't boot at all - if it wasn't for both symptoms it could have been an inverter issue, but with it not powering up at all on occasion it is difficult to be sure from here.
Yes I confirm that in all probablity the data can be retireved via use of a caddy - make sure first whether the connection is pata or sata as the connections are different.0 -
pata or sata?? i am not really a techie guy im a landscaper and handyman0

With the limited info we have, and the symptoms you describe and I understand it is the same with power or battery only, then it either an internal connection issue (ie the on/off button not making proper contact but this is unlikely to case the screen issue), but more probably a motherboard fault, it is possible it is a combination of issues, caused by a power failure.
PB's aren't brilliant, in my experience their fail rate is higher than average, so it may be time to consider an alternative............
PS when you take out the hdd from the lappie pata drives have a series of pins in two rows, with 4 pins off to the right. Sata on the other hand have a series of contacts in two groups, the smaller to the right has 7 contacts - you can google them to find out - http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/Serial_ATA_(SATA,_Serial_Advanced_Technology_Attachment)0 -
ok i take that on board. can you suggest a good priced laptop that can be used for playing pc games aswell as work ?
thanks for your advise0
