Peeling paint below window?

Options
First of all, I'm not sure what the proper name is for these, but on my flat below the bay window is an area that's tiled. I would post a photo but it says as a new user I can't :(

Is this cladding or is there a name for this specific bit of the house?

On the inside of the living room below the window (so on the bit that has this 'tiling'), some of the paint is peeling off the walls. The wall doesn't feel damp though.

I was wondering if there might be something wrong with the tiles which is causing this peeling and if it might be a sign of something that I really need to get fixed. And if it does need fixing, what's likely to need doing? Any idea of cost would be appreciated too.

Thank you!

Do you mean a tiled windowshelf?. Sounds like inadequate preparation before painting more than anything else.

Upload your pic to imageshack, photobucket or similar.

Cut and paste the resultant forum url as per their instructions but before you hit submit delete the http bit. That way it will be posted as text rather than a link.

One of us can then replace the http bit and we can see your pic.

  • Thanks Keystone, I don't have a picture of my flat but here is a neigbouring house with the same thing (i.e. the grey and brown areas below the top window):

I don't think I did a very good job explaining what it is! (also I feel a bit stupid for not knowing the name!)

    Ahh - this one:

Oh sorry I though you meant an internal tiled window cill - my mistake.

It just known as tile hung and its constructed just like the roof with tiles hung on battens. Its decoirative more than anything else.

The wall behind it will be colder than a solid wall and maybe prone to condensation. Without seeing it in the flesh I still think its down to inadequate preparation before painting in all honesty.

  • Thanks again! Sorry for another stupid question, but what would have been the proper prep for painting it?

I removed some old vinyl wallpaper, sugar soaped the wall clean, then used a basecoat paint followed by normal paint. It looked good for about a year, then this peeling has happened.

Also, what's the best way to fix it now? I guess I have to sand down the peeled bits and repaint, but what else?

    Thanks

Sorry to appear to avoid the question but it depends on the substrate. And I wasn't being critiacl of your skills. It probably needs an alkali resistant primer or something like that which resists and dampness.

  • Thanks again, don't worry I didn't think you were being critical! It was my first time painting a room so I'm sure it could have been improved upon.
