KB 2585542 kills my WIFI

I have a spare computer, an Acer Aspire M1610 with Windows 7 Ultimate connected via a Netgear V111.V2 wireless adapter to my Virgin router.

It is only used rarely when my grandkids come to visit, saves them screwing up my computer.

In anticipation of a visit I fired it up and there were some updates waiting to be installed, so I installed them.

After they installed and the computer rebooted and I could not connect to the internet or even to my wireless printer.

So I did a sytem restore and installed the updates one by one.

Took a while.

The update that killed my network connection is KB 2585542 so of course I didn't install it but every time I turned the computer on it was installed and I had to do a system restore to get rid of it.

I have had to turn off automatic updates because of this.

Any suggestions on how to stop this or make it work correctly?

  • Turn off Automatic Updates, choose Notify but Do Not Install instead, when you get a notification that there are updates go through the list till you find the offending article then choose block/hide update, then turn on Automatic Updates and you shouldn't be bothered by it again.

a quick search shows many similar issues with this particular update, but reading a couple of them it would seem that, for the average home user, not installing this update won't really compromise your pc, so as suggested above, hide that update and just don't install it for now....in light of so many issues there'll probably be one in the next round that'll sort it properly....
