Price comparison results - Scottish Power & Ebico

Using the recommended energyhelpline.com, and I have details of spend and consumption from quarterly bills over the last year.

We are with EDF standard tariff and have economy 7 meter. We heat water with immersion heater (timed to come on during E7) and heat with electric heaters (not E7). Gas from British Gas, standard tariff (cooking only).

If I enter spend per year (£732 electric, £66 gas) E7 averaging at 35% and get comparison for Pay on receipt of bill, the results are best savings:
Gas & Electric £15 (Ecotricity New Energy + Green Gas)
Gas only £30 (Ebico Equigas)
Electricity only £92 (Scottish Power Online Fixed to May 2013)

If I enter the kWh per fuel:
Gas & Electric £25 (EDF Fix to March 2013)
Gas only £37 (Ebico Equigas)
Electricity only £103 (Scottish Power Online Fixed to May 2013)

Opting for tariffs with paper billing (preferred) can still save £72/year with Scottish Power Capped Price Energy Jan 2013 for electricity, and again £37 from Ebico for gas.

Obvious question - what are Scottish Power like to deal with - do they mess up billing or switching. Ditto Ebico. Have never switched before

If you are only using E7 for your immersion heater then chances are you are over paying and would be better off with a single tarriff.
Heating with gas would be cheaper than electric.
I have used Ebico myself and they wre fine to deal with, actually you deal with SSE for all billing and CS.
Ebico are usually only competitive for very low users.

    Can't comment on Scottish Power.

I was with EDF and switched to Scottish Power. There was a bit of a mess with switching over with both sides blaming the other! My belief is that the problems were caused by EDF as I always appeared to have problems when I was with them! Been with Scottish Power for a year now and have had no problems, do an online meter reading, within a couple of seconds I know what my bill will be and when debited. When there were problems with the switch they contacted/called me back when they said they would(unlike EDF) and when I lost power to my home(beyond the meter)they were extremely helpful and sent contractors out who fixed the problem in about an hour.

    Thanks.
Have been wondering about whether we'd be better on a single electricity tariff. Do you know if they (whoever the supplier) simply adds both readings and then charges at the single rate, or whether they would (for free) install a single rate meter?

Yes gas would probably be cheaper but have to factor in ~£5000 to install gas CH. When the heating finally packs in then we'll certainly move to gas heating.

    Thanks.
Have been wondering about whether we'd be better on a single electricity tariff. ...

Then wonder no more. Put the figures into the comparison site and find out for sure.

If it happens you find a single rate supply would be financially beneficial, then speak with the supplier to discover what their policy is as you currently have a dual rate meter; suppliers each have their own policy on this.

Use your annual kWh figures for comparisons-not monthly or annual spends-the latter do not produce accurate results.
