Removing harddrive

Please can someone give me some guidance on physically removing the harddrive from a laptop I'd like to sell.

It's a HP Pavilion.

I have removed a panel from the underside... the one with a little image of what looks like three pineapple rings stacked up. Am I in the right section? If so how do I get the silver harddrive looking thing out?!

Usually there's a small screw and a plastic or ribbon tag attached to the drive and a gap at one end of the enclosure. Remove the screw then gently pull on the tag towards the gap. The drive should unclip from the connector allowing you to lift it free.

If this doesn't help, post a photo of the underside of the laptop so I can see the area you're referring to.

if you're removing the HDD to sell the lappy, PLEASE remember to take the caddy off the drive and include it with the laptop. When you take the drive out as described above, the caddy is the metal frame around the hdd itself, screwed to the hdd body by usually 4 small screws. These are laptop-specific, and it can be a real nause to find one to match a particular model of laptop, so you'll get an extra couple of quid if you include the caddy when selling it :)

you'd probably get much more money for it if you backed up your data, factory restored it, then wipe free space with ccleaner - 10 minutes effort - a machine with no hard disk, and no windows is worth far less.

true, but if you ARE selling it with no hdd, then include the caddy :)

  • Hi,

    Thanks for help so far.

The laptop is HP Pavilion dv1665eu so underside looks a little different to the example in the "idiots guide" which has two HDs indicated - how do I know if mine also has two?

So far I have managed to remove the HD in caddy by pulling on ribbon as suggested (took more force than I first thought!)

Is it just a case of unscrewing caddy and sliding HD out now? Then returning empty caddy to laptop and screw cover back in place?

Is the caddy a two part item or a one part item? I unscrewed four screws and an obvious metal piece came off but there's another metal part that is attached with another six screws (has writing and barcodes on) - is this part of the caddy or the HDD?

Also, the HDD still has the extra plastic bit that attaches inside laptop (sorry can't remember name) - do I keep this or include it with the caddy and laptop?

  • Above questions still puzzling me and I'm wondering if there's a second HDD to be removed from this model (dv1665eu)?

They vary from make to make but it should be fairly obvious which bit is the drive and which bit is the caddy/adapter that fits into your laptop. Google for a picture of your particular make/model of hard drive to see what a bare drive looks like. One make of hard drive is interchangeable with another make i.e. they would both fit in the HP caddy/adapter.

If there is a second hard drive fitted, you will see it when you remove the cover!
