Windows Defender Turned Off....

Hi, All

I hope someone is able to help me with this...

A few weeks ago I posted about removing Norton 360 and replacing it with some cheaper security. I've only just done this as I had a few weeks of Norton left until my subscription ended

So, this afternoon, I have uninstalled Norton 360, and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials. This seems to be set up fine - lots of green ticks :j

However, my laptop keeps telling me that Windows Defender is switched off and recommends I switch it on...I'd love to, but keep getting an error OX800106ba.

When I've searched on Windows Defender, I just get offered the option of switching it on, then get this error.

Is there anything else I should be doing? I have Windows Vista.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help

xx

You can try and turn on the Windows Defender Service by the services setting by:

    Control Panel->Administrative tools->Services
then locate WD and double click it, select "startup type" as automatic, then click "log on" tab, click "Local System account" and check the only check box available.
Click the "recovery" tab and make sure WD tries atleast two time to start, you can understand from the information you see there.
Now, click the "General" Tab and clikc "start"

    Close the window.

Now locate the file Windows Defender in Control Panel and double click it

If your still having trouble check here.
Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.

How do I add a signature?
  • Windows defender is not needed with Microsoft Security Essentials, and so it turns it off when it is installed.
I've never been nagged to turn it on again, so I'm not sure why you're getting that.

    Thank you everyone.

I tried the various suggestions, but could not find Defender in the list of programs to uninstall, so went searching again, and then found another website that basically says it's not needed with Microsoft Essentials due to conflicts. I probably discovered that at the same time you posted, Andrew! :T

It's stopped nagging me now - the error came up once soon after installing essentials, and then only came up again because I kept trying to switch it back on...dhurr!

I've learned a bit more today, though :D

    Many thanks for your help

  • Glad you've solved it.

Defender is a bit like Internet Explorer in that it is built in to Vista and Windows 7, so you can't uninstall it.

It should sit there quietly, and turned off, now anyway. You'll forget it's there after a while.:)
