BT auto renewing contracts query

hi

I vaguely recall reading that Ofcom had apparently banned auto renewing phone contracts.

We're on the old 'unlimited evenings and weekends' call plan which we get for free for 12 months each time we renew with BT.

Every year, BT normally send out a letter to remind us the contract will automatically renew, though last year, we didn't receive such a letter.

Q. Can anyone tell me what is BT's policy on these existing auto renewing contracts?

Q. If we choose not to renew the above call plan and revert to the normal 'Unlimited Weekends' call plan, is there a minimum contract term for this call plan for existing customers like myself ?

Tnx in advance.

According to the BT Rep on this forum, the contract will not automatically renew but you would still have your same products at the same price.

Tnx jem16 for the reply. I hadn't realised the same question had been asked/answered as recently as yesterday.

Presumably that should allow you to stay on the Unlimited Evening & Weekend plan for the same price and no need to change to Unlimited Weekend only.

Yes, I will now stay on same plan as I now understand there shouldn't be any early termination fees to pay after 12 months has passed later this year.

I had also signed up to non-refundable Line Rental Saver last autumn, and it was confusing having different renewal dates for the call plan and the line rental. I did ask BT at the time to renew my call plan, early, so it began on same date as the Line Rental Saver contract, but it looks like the request was ignored as I never received confirmation for the early renewal of the call plan.

BT have already loaded their line rental to cover for the Evening & Weekends loss of lock-in, so there' nothing to worry about there. The contracts didn;t renew, only the minimum term was re-set, and it was this that barred by OFCOM.

E&W calls are now included FOC in your line rental with BT.

The Unlimited Weekend calls plan is included f.o.c. with line rental.

The Unlimited Evening & Weekend calls plan costs £3.15/month according to the BT website.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
