Yeah that's what I was hoping but I thought it would be cheaper for me to send a letter to them as I don't have a landline at the moment.

Also, I am reluctant to sign up for a DD as I used to work in a call centre for a company that required people sign up to direct debits and there were huge problems with the system. With DD if one month their system doesn't take the money from my account I will still get charged all the interest etc. as if I hadn't paid. DD systems are not foolproof and I don't like the idea of giving a company access to my bank account to take however much they want.

D/D is more reliable than you are to be honest.
If your statement says £xx will be debited on yz date then it will, or if not you are not responsible for the consequences.

Sorry to bring this old topic back up, but after sending them a letter they have credited me back the £12 charge. In future I will be more careful.
