The only word of caution (based on two people's experiences with a Citroen), is French electrics and their unreliability on older vehicles. Go on the Mondeo forum and see how many Mondys have done more than 200K miles. I have a 1.8 petrol, 12 years old with 120K and it runs like a three year old car. Sure, a Citroen C5 is a very comfy vehicle, but what about servicing, insurance and parts?
  • A Mondeo with over 100,000 miles isn't a problem - mine has close to 200,000 and I know several people with them getting close to 300,000. The auto box would put me off as it isn't a nice box on the Mk3.

The C5 diesel auto will be nice and wafty to drive cand offer mega comfort. But be prepared for lectric problems...

Had a few issues with Ford autoboxes personally.

i'd echo the above, manual, assuming clutch is ok, should be fine. Auto, I'd want to be a bit more careful on. If it slips a band in the 'box budget for either a replacement or about £700 to have the existing one reconditioned.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • I have a Rover 420 SDI - 2 litre Diesel
Its on 156k now and is the best, most reliable car I have ever owned and has suffered nothing but abuse - last oil change was 2008!
It starts every day without fail come hail or shine and just tanks on forever.
I have taken pity on it and its booked in for brakes this weekend and I am going to give it its first service for 4 years - flush the oil - the lot.
change all the filters then next couple of months Im going to get the cam belt changed and all the auxiliary belts.
Its proved its worth - I haven't been good to it as I assumed a cat-d write off would be a heap that would last me 12 months max.
I think this !!!!!! will outlast me in actual fact.

I was going to get rid and buy a C3 diesel instead but to be honest, the Rover is so flipping good I cant let it go and think it deserves a few pennies spent on it now to get it looking happier again.
    Crying Shame Rover died.
  • TBH I think we've long got past the point where buying something with 100k or more on is a problem if its been looked after. Its not like up to the 80's where a car was absolutely shagged by 80,000 miles and usually in the scrap yard.

Yes but as this post proves and probably quite a few others, That 100,000 mile mark seems to be firmly stuck in buyers minds.

Doesnt bother me. Helps keep the price down.

One thing i spotted today, I was at an old peoples home and the blue badge cars all lined up. Not one of them attempted to scrape the windows. One guy left his running for 20 minutes to warm up and clear the screen.
Just think of all that engine wear when he trades it in with a couple of thousand miles on the clock.
And the worn out wiper motor and window motors as they keep pressing the buttons until the fuse blows or the frozen rubber breaks free.

  • Not read some of the replies but I think of it this way...
If I was buying a 10 year old car that had a low mileage I'd be wondering if it was because it was broken down half the time. A 10 year old car with 100000 miles means it's done about 10000 a year which is average and probably means it's fairly reliable.
My car is a 1994 and has done 172000 miles, it has never broken down. High mile count for me is a total non issue and I'd be paying close attention to other aspects of the car like if it smokes, are there any leaks, body work etc.

I finally said goodbye to my trusty 1997 Mk.2 Mondeo in July 2010 after seeing 123,456 miles come up on the odometer. She was still running as well as ever. She only ever let me down three times, due to a knackered battery, then due to me inadvertently draining the battery and then due to a tyre blowout. It was the fuel consumption (35mpg, although I didn't think that wasn't too bad for a 1.8) and especially the impending £215 car tax that forced me to downsize to a 1.4 diesel Fiesta (52.25mpg & £30 car tax).
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

Mondy's are great, had 3 diesels.

Sold first on 167k, second at 145k & I'm on my third now at 185k but I'm going to hang on to it, it runs sweet.

    Brilliant cars.
