    LOL

I was reading this thread thinking-sounds odd but Comet aren't the best retailer so maybe there's some truth in in............ then got to the bit about who it must be because "Croydon is a dodgy area" .

What ? All of it? The Purley Way ? Just the Whitgift centre ? Must admit I can name a few shopping areas I'd consider dodgy but Croydon certainly isn't on the list. Have you actually been there to shop ???

Thanks for the laugh though but you blew any credibility in your tale with that.

Croydon is a hole. Sorry but that's the truth and if you think otherwise that's pretty lol. We've been shopping their as long as i can remember and have been employed by croydon council in various ways. Its well known you don't go out to the bars and clubs for a night out there unless you want to risk ending up stabbed. Also you might have noticed it plastered all over the tv recently during the riots, wonder why that was. hmmm... :rotfl:

Don't get me wrong i've warmed up to it but its a rough area with rough people. Best shopping variety in our area but i wouldn't want to live there, we have friends there and the things we hear are not good. During the riots they were to scared to sleep in case someone set alight to the shop underneath their home, they have children !!!!!! and that's not funny.

Also Lidl which got looted still hasn't reopened, its abandoned and i don't think they plan to come back. They were obviously shocked enough to cut their losses. Then their the running racial fights by the different ethnic groups and the gang violence. So laugh it up glad i made your day.

But you can't beat it for variety in shopping that is a fact. We go for the convenience, closest costco, tesco, large factor outlets etc.

What happened in a nutshell was that we payed £650, got the transaction processed, got a reciept and then we were told their is no product in store come back tomorrow, if we refund you they won't send the product so we are not giving you your money back.

It seems legally dubious to me, but whether it was bait advertising is doubtful given the company. (i think?)

What happened between getting the receipt & being told the product is not instore? Did they go out back to get it or did they tell you straight away, therefore knowing full well it wasn't in stock?

I think they checked, she said someone went to get it then the Manager basically said its human error, it happens, get over it, though not in as many words.

Duchy i have no problem with geography, we go to west croydon for our ethnic shopping, another reason we go their for convenience as it literally has it all. (ethnic shops, wholesalers, large warehouse stores, large tesco, all the chains.)

I have been warming to it recently, getting a sense of community. The library is nice, the buildings and architecture are nice (the old ones not the high rise grey towers) but its not considered a nice area by us country folk, it is in fact something of a mini ghetto and i studied 3 years in north london living near finsbury park so i'm not a naive about inner/outer city decay.

We also get a running commentary on the gang and race violence from friends who live there which tends to colour our views.
  • If she dug her heels in then the misrepresentation on availability means she could have got a refund.

Your general rant about Croydon is priceless - why go there if it such a hole? I tend not to frequent the places I don't like.

Dont Comet have a 28 day return policy anyway?

I'm getting the impression it's not a case of op wanting to cancel the order, but wanting the money refunded until when the item is in stock therefore paying when receiving the goods. (Although the refund would take several days to appear anyway)

Could it have been a genuine mistake then?

Correct, she was put out by the fact it was a sizable amount and the Manager's strange reluctance to refund it and take payment when the product arrives.

She gets 10% off there, and we have been promising to buy the laptop for my foster brother for 3 weeks now but kept having to cancel because of sickness, so we have no desire to cancel or do anything resulting in no stock being delivered. :)

Mistake? Sure but that is usually solved by a punctual apology and refund not a rude Manager that refuses you a refund tells you to come back tomorrow and throws a £20 voucher in your face for the inconvenience. Dismissive doesn't cover it.

Also its a lot of money that alone is a bit scary.
  • People trying to defend Croydon? It's a total hole, I was seconded there for work and had a few hours free to potter about.

I got a fairly good feel for the place, I don't see how anyone can truthfully defend it!

I reckon the game is this. They didn't have the item in stock. But it is month end and the manager and possibly the staff are on incentive to reach a sales target by end of month. So they sold, knowing full well it was not in stock.

Comet is one of those businesses I have on my personal watch list as being likely to go into administration. Their attitude to simple matters like fulfilling their responsibilities over defective goods stinks. Their official representative has been here in the past defending the indefensible and IIRC suggesting that Comet's responsibilities are fulfilled if the manufacturer will take defective product back and deal direct with the customer. So I would not be the least surprised if they are in financial trouble.

When a company goes bankrupt, if you have paid over £650 without receiving the goods, that money is at risk.
