CARLA LANE’S wonderfully stylish comedy series Butterflies Series One and Butterflies Series Two are to be released as two double DVDs by Acorn on 5 February 2007. The DVDs include several special features; an exclusive interview with Carla Lane, cast and scriptwriter’s filmographies, interactive menus, scene index and production notes. One of the major TV comedy hits from the late 1970s, Butterflies Series One is centred around the everyday world of Ria Parkinson (Wendy Craig) and her anxiety that her role in life has been reduced to one of a mere spectator whilst the best years are passing her by. Ria is a seemingly happily married mother of two teenage sons. Her husband is the lugubrious dentist Ben (Geoffrey Palmer). Ben’s hobby is collecting butterflies, although he seems to spend most of his time arguing with their sons; the thoughtful Russell (Andrew Hall) and the ever cynical Adam (Nicholas Lyndhurst). Then, one day she bumps into a handsome businessman, Leonard, whom she dreams will sweep her off her feet. Acorn is releasing all six episodes from series one, including the first ever episode, on this DVD.

The two DVDs in Butterflies Series Two feature all seven episodes including the Christmas Special. The programmes were originally broadcast on BBC One in 1979 - the year in which Margaret Thatcher first entered 10 Downing Street, Nottingham Forest won the European Cup and The Knack topped the charts with My Sharona. This bittersweet comedy remains just as funny and sharp today as it was 27 years ago. Butterflies was first broadcast on BBC One in 1978 running for four series until it finally came to an end in 1983. The cast were reunited in November 2000 in a specially scripted one-off episode broadcast as part of the BBC’s Children in Need appeal.

The Butterflies Series One and Series Two DVDs are available priced £19.99 each from High Street stores or by calling the Acorn Video sales hotline on 0845 123 2312.
