DHL - didn't even try to deliver!

I thought I'd vent about an item I was expecting from a courier today. I was waiting in for it in the morning and I was downstairs, wandering around, and as I went upstairs I noticed a DHL van at the end of the drive. I figured he'd ring so I headed downstairs only to witness him driving off without so much as ringing the bell. I didn't have the TV on, and I tested the bell straight after, and it was working fine. He'd just parked his van, got out, shoved a card through and cleared off!

Needless to say, I was a bit narked at this so I rang up DHL and the guy there claimed there'd been an attempt to deliver. Even without actually asking me for any details identifying who I was! I explained that he hadn't so much as rung and the guy just stonewalled me, refusing to get the guy to deliver, even though he'd left my house about ten minutes ago, because they were apparently 'on a route'. Really? Last time I checked, we still have roads, not some sort of one-way Scalectrix system. So in the end I decided to pick up the parcel from town, but I don't be able to get it till tomorrow. Anyone else had similar hassles with DHL?

  • My saga hasnt played out quite as far as yours (yet) but I had a card from DHL yesterday so say there was a delivery received. I rang the number provided on it (all night!) and it went straight into the 'orange answerphone'. I rang CS this morning (got the number for the local branch in Ammanford - West Wales) and was put onto a different number/dept in The Valleys (Pontypridd/Rhondda way). The lady I spoke to said she would get hold of the driver, organise a time for me to go home to arrange delivery, then call me with the time (I can leave work at any time, just cant sit at home all day waiting for the div's!)

    Heard nothing...

Rang back at 12 o'clock. Woman asks if i've had a call from the driver (urm, no!) then says she will get him to call me to arrange a delivery time! Its half 3, and have I heard anything? You guessed it!

I'm ringin again in half hour, as I hate pestering people all day, but I also hate these companies (like Argos et al) who promise hasstle free deliveries, then go back on this and provide appalling service. Wish me luck anyway, I dont expect to get anywhere with them!!!

  • Well, I rang back at 4, spoke to a different woman who said she would get the driver to ring me. To his (and her0 credit he did, and asked when I would behome from work, I told him and he told me he'd wait till after the rush hour, and deliver 5:45-6! No sign until 6:30 when he turned up with his son, in his own car!!!

Fair play, not sure if these guys get petrol allowance, but to deliver to me at half 6 was a really nice gesture, and he was a nice guy too (kid had arsenal shirt on, but cant all be perfect!! )

Anyway, all in all a small problem sorte, and i'm one happy customer! :D

DHL are using self employed agents who do use their own transport. We have one deliver to us regularly ...... and then a DHL van turns up later with some more.

As a driver for a large high street retailer who 'live electricals' ;) I am used to getting calls from my office claiming that I haven't made an attempt to deliver as the customer has been in all day

However, we have a system in place where, when we ring the office to say there is no-one at home, we have to give a description of the property. It's amazing how quickly people will back down when they know we have been :D
  • Like the OP I have had this before with DHL. Was expecting delivery one day so had a note stuck to the door for them to ring bell and please await answer as I knew they were coming. Walked into the kitchen and back into hallway about 20 seconds later to find they hadn't knocked or rang bell, just stuck card through the door. I immediately phoned DHL who got the driver to come back and actually deliver the parcel. I hope he got what for when he got back - he didnt even deny that he hadnt even tried to deliver the item either.

  • I had a really bad experience with DHL just before Christmas 2005.

My husband ordered some items on the internet but tragically he passed away before the items were delivered. When a driver from DHL courier service arrived in his own car with the goods I told him I did not want the goods as they were in my husbands name and my husband had passed away. He practically threw the goods into my front porch and told me I had to take them.

Shocked and in a terrible state I came into the house and telephoned DHL. They told me that I did not have to accept the goods and they would speak to the driver who was temporary. They said they would send a different driver to collect the goods. A driver from DHL collected the goods a few days later.

A couple of weeks later the first delivery driver came to my door and asked directions to a completely different road from mine. This also distressed me. I think he came to let me see he was still working for them. I now hate to see him coming and still get very upset.

Some people leave very good memories and some very bad.

Sounds strange why would he go to your house and have no intention of delivering a parcel doesn't make sense.

The only think i can think of he knocked on the door and you took a while to answer or didnt hear it so he left a card.
  • I agree with deanos.

If the driver couldn't be bothered to deliver the parcel then why go to the effort of posting a card through the door?
