I am going to Australia for 12 months, need help with flights

CDaniels1987

When would be best to book to get the cheapest deal? and also would I be better off booking a return or one-way? I can fly from any Airport in the UK and I would like to get it as cheap as possible!

Thanks in advance.

Oh I completely forgot to post when I am thinking of going. I am looking September 2012 time

Return flight in many cases will be cheaper than a single oneway (eg Emirates going out Sept back Oct this year is £723, but the same flights out as a single ticket is £781) however you are likely to want/need a ticket that allows changes for a fee.
The problem is that flights tend to be released 11 months out so whilst you can book your outwards fine, the flights for Sept 2013 will not be released so you are going to struggle to be able to book this yourself on the net
Probably be best to speak to someone like trailfinders or a travel agent as this is something they will come across frequently

My brother just got back from 12months, he booked separate flights and this was definitely more expensive. Contact STA as they will be used to dealing with this sort of query.

Have you considered a Round The World (RTW) ticket? You are after all going half way round the world, so why not complete the circuit.
