So which is more MSE to buy - Hard or Soft? As I understand it then, the hard wood burns for longer (perhaps not as hot) compared to softwood. Would the hardwood burn say 50% longer than the softwood to offset the price difference?

not sure

depends how well its seasoned & how big the logs are?, hard wood takes longer to season/dry out

Some of the logs supplied will need another few months to season properly and need aired out of the bag

I burn a mixture in my wood stove

Based on my own experience, hardwood will burn for at least twice as long.

Coniferous softwood can also release resins that condense as a sticky mess in the flue, possibly increasing the risk of a chimney fire. However, home owners in Nordic countries burn softwood all the time and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

I've noticed softwood burns hotter & cleaner when its very well seasoned and very dry (burn and not smoulder)

Nordic countries may season/dry out their timber better ?

We buy seasoned hardwood logs from cedarwood fuels up near lisburn. £35 for about 1/3 of a ton "trolley bag" which just about fills the boot of the car and lasts about a month. Hardwood burns for longer, gives off better heat and no nasty resins to block the flue.

That's interesting - what do you burn the wood in (fireplace or stove) and how many hours do you have it on for? This would allow me to see how long a cubic meter bag would last us. Sounds as if hardwood is the way to go then.

5KW stove, usually lit late afternoon, shovel of phurnacite to get it going then feed it with a log every so often and maybe another shovel of purnacite during the evening. Usually stop feeding it about 11 and leave it to burn out.
