My sons Dell Inspiron 1545 is stuck on the 'welcome' screen. It will load in safe mode but that is all. Could anyone offer me some assistance please. I am clueless to say the least

Run a system restore in Safe Mode. Back to a date when you know the computer was working.
Start -> Control Panel -> System & Security -> Backup & RestoreIf my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
Thank you. I restored it back as far as I could, but it is still not getting past the welcome screen. Some people see the glass half full, others see the glass half empty - the enlightened are simply grateful to have a glass0

You will need to do a repair.
Do you know which version of Windows you have?
Is it Windows XP? Was Service Pack 3 recently installed? If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
It is windows 7 and to be honest I doubt he takes any notice of updatesSome people see the glass half full, others see the glass half empty - the enlightened are simply grateful to have a glass0

Have you tried any of these solutions:

I would suggest making a backup of any important documents in Safe Mode before doing anything else.
If you still have the original Windows 7 disk, you can launch the repair by restarting with the disk in the drive. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -

I tried the CHKDSK thing...... it said
'windows found problems with the file system
Cannot lock current drive
CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process'
I don't seem to have a windows 7 disc, so not sure what to do now. Some people see the glass half full, others see the glass half empty - the enlightened are simply grateful to have a glass0 -
Try booting in Safe Mode with Command Prompt and then run CHKDSK.If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0

Thank you.
I think that's what I did
I followed this.....
Is it hanging at the Welcome Screen?
Do these to clear corruption and repair/replace damaged/missing system files.
Run DiskCleanup - Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup
Start - type in Search box - COMMAND find at top of list - RIGHT CLICK - RUN AS ADMIN
sfc /scannow
Then run checkdisk (chkdsk).
It then said to add /F to fix the problems, which I did and it came up with what I typed in my last post. Some people see the glass half full, others see the glass half empty - the enlightened are simply grateful to have a glass0
