Electricity meter has stopped!
Hi all,
I wonder if I can get some advice please!
My electricity meter appears to have stopped!
The meter reading is showing the same as it did 3 weeks ago when I read it for the supplier to do the bill.
The disc thing below the number seems to be going round very very slowly, but the number has not changed at all, not even the red number at the end (which I assume is 10ths).
I don't know what to do as obviously I have been using electricity and like to keep an eye on usage, although I pay on a monthly direct debit so shouldn't be racking up a huge bill!
I'm worried that by ringing the supplier up they will come and do something and then try to say I have underpaid by loads - the last time I checked it before the 3 weeks ago was in December, so it must have gone wrong sometime in the last few weeks!
Thanks for reading and any suggestions would be very welcome!

Maybe best to do nothing!
You aren't responsible for ensuring it works!!0 -
What a win!
I guess ring your supplier though - it'll catch up with you eventually if you don't.0 -
You'd be silly not to report it. They'd find out eventually when they do readings themselves and they'll then estimate usage and you'll most likely end up paying more than you should.0

That's just daft.
You may NOT be responsible for ensuring the meter works, but you ARE responsible for paying for what you have used, so the right thing to do is ring the supplier and report it.
They will put a new meter in and estimate how much you have used based upon a period of time after the new meter is fitted.0 -
Estimated bills in these situations invariably work out in your favour. It's only been down for a few weeks, so your prior patern of consumption should be clear enough.
Get it reported. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Go back to insurance section, op as others have said as you are using energy they will estimate it so given them a call.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0 -
Thanks for all the replies!
Yes I think I will report it on Monday, as I am worrying about it and don't want them to over-estimate my usage!
I'll report back what happens - as I know when reading these threads you often wonder what the eventual outcome was!0 -
There's going to be a cold snap over the next two weeks so if you use electric for heating I'd be inclined to wait until it gets mild again before you report it. That way, you can go mad and have the house nice and warm while it's -5C outside and then get estimated on average usage.
However, if you have gas central heating, you may as well report it straight away.0 -
They can estimate it but you can challenge it. They have got no idea what you have used, if you've been on holiday or banged up!0

But it's only been broken for 4 weeks. They have the OP's consumption figures prior to that date to base the estimate on.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
