Franchises - anyone found a winner or even a dud ?

My other half and a few of her friends are interested in working for themselves as a sort of mini business and though I and they already have a few ideas, I wondered whether anyone would care to share their experiences of franchising.

Now this could be from running a successful franchise or even having one fail but it could equally be a potential franchise purchase which was dismissed because the business plan simply did not stack up or the claims made were too outlandish.

My gut feeling is that there is a whole lot of rubbish out there in the franchising world and that few are worth the extra cost of simply starting up yourself in the same sphere.

I hope people have some interesting stories to tell !
