most 4 plate hobs will exceed 3kw.

I'm presuming the OP would want to make their apple pie in the oven!?

Does a single hob really use 3kW?

  • Sounds like it is a case of better safe than sorry. I don't want to do anything that has a tangible risk, so will wait til Monday. I'm just glad I had handyman booked in anyway so don't have to wait longer.
Come Monday I'll have cooker, curtain rails and all sorts sorted out. Yay!

    this one is 7kw.
    5 - 7kw is not unusual.

a single oven may use less than 1kw.
    Get some gorm.
  • Thank you. I may leave it til Monday then. I've waited this long so will just have to wait a little longer.
I'm OK with plumbing as its bloomin obvious if you've done sommat wrong, but I'm scared of electricity :o

hahaha, how many times have i been out to jobs where the customer has said that, "well it looked easy i've read all the books" do you want my phone no :rotfl:
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

I meant a single hob ring 1/4. Unlikely to draw more than 3kW.

Understand what you mean! I would only tackle very simple jobs. Apart from anything else you need to make sure it meets current legislation.
A lot of the smaller jobs I do, the main things are identifying the right part you need, having the right tools, a bit of common sense and an emergency back up plumber!

Issue of the cooker has been resolved anyway. It has no wire but a special wiring box at the bottom. Even if I could get down on the floor to connect the wire, I couldn't manipulate my hands to do the job, so apple pie will have to wait a couple of days.
Learned some interesting things on this thread though. Love picking up little bits of info like that.

Just to make sure your handyman does the right thing, why don't you post the kW rating of the oven here so we can check?
  • Says 240v, 10500 W?? There is a wiring diagram and another friend told me a standard cooker socket isn't wired like a 3-pin plug, so I am leaving well alone!

Cooker has obviously been stored for a while and there's rust on the radiant rings. Any idea of the best/safest thing to use to get rid? Soap and water and elbow grease, I bet.:D

That's a 10.5kW cooker. Probably best to assume 11kW. Hopefully your handyman is able to check the supply cabling and switch is adequate for this.

I recently tried Hob Brite from a supermarket to clean a ceramic hob. It doesn't work brilliantly and you end up having to scrape rust off anyway.

Have a look at this old thread for some suggestions:

  • House is brand new, so would think that wiring is up to scratch, but you can't take anything for granted.

Thanks for the info and the link. That's really helpful.
